Censorship in a Texas School

Not so. Comparative religion classes are quite common in public schools.

Which this was not. It was an economics class.

How would you feel about having the Protocols of Zion being taught to you in Phys Ed

I have no disagreement with any of that. By high school, at least, students should be taught the truth in all matters including what you are describing, as well as the Turkish genocide against Armenians and the Muslim genocide everywhere they conquered, especially against Hindus.

ETA: Custer was a Lt. Col. when he died, not a general.

Mascots are usually animals. I don't recall ever seeing a Native American as a mascot, although I have seen a pugnacious Irish caricature and Vikings and other ethnicities. College teams who use Indian names usually get clearance from the specific tribal council before doing so. I don't know if Notre Dame has ever asked anybody's permission.

Seriously?

So you saw no R*dskins, Indians, Tomahawks, Braves, Savages?

Really?

And as for Notre Dame's logo: It's a Leprechaun! Something that is mythical!

That would presume schools still have Phys Ed! Most districts cut it!

Third Graders Brainwashed Into Revering Cop Killer Mumia Abu-Jamal

If there is one thing we should all be able agree on, it is that Mumia Abu-Jamal (a.k.a. Wesley Cook), who executed Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner, is an evil piece of garbage. But we can’t even agree on that. That’s why he won’t face the death penalty he so richly deserves.

One day though there will be agreement. Everyone will agree that this psychopathic murderer is a hero. After all, that’s what they are taught in school.

Johanna Fernandez, a history professor at Baruch College, dolefully reports that Wesley is in poor health. But there is a happy note:

We shared a touching moment with Mumia in an effort to raise his spirits. Two teachers delivered letters to us that their students had written to Mumia. One batch came from a third grade class taught by Ms. Marylin Zuniga in Orange, New Jersey. The other batch was from a group of high school students in the Philadelphia Student Union, which fights for school reform and is led by Mr. Hiram Rivera.

It had been a long time since we had seen Mumia smile. He chuckled as he read excerpts from these touching letters.

Sorry, Charles Manson. Not all maniacal homicidal lowlifes have schoolrooms turned into fan clubs in their honor. There are certain racial requirements.

Regarding Ms. Zuniga, here is what her students have been taught regarding Eric Garner, who died of his heart problems following an arrest supervised by a black police sergeant:

I believe that a WHITE police will just jump on a BLACK man and acusse him of selling ciggarets so what many people sell ciggarets you why would you coke someone to death for doing something iligle

The teacher’s take on it is still more appalling (apparently the account was deleted since last night):

If a 3rd grader can tell it like it is..never underestimate youth. The mind of a child is where the revolution begins! pic.twitter.com/TBlNBa9ZRT

The mind of a child is where the revolution begins. That’s why Obama’s mentor Bill Ayers stopped setting off bombs and became an education professor.

I have never seen a mascot dressed as any of those things or people. The ND mascot is a full-sized person, not a sprite.

All that he or she did was to distribute pamphlets to students detailing some of the negative aspects of Islam. He has a right to do this. It would come under the heading of either Freedom of Speech or Freedom of the Press.

Taken from that article:

A high school economics teacher is facing disciplinary action after allegedly distributing anti-Muslim handouts to his students.

Even if everything in the leaflet was true, and I don't believe it is, what does it have to do with economics? The teacher clearly had an agenda, and was trying to force it onto the students.

The teacher should be disciplined.

Why is this crazy thread still going on? Maybe in Texas a teacher's agreement would let a teacher do this, but not in a civilized state. When you get a job in a whole realm of professions, including this one, you sign away your "right" to behave in certain ways.

Freedom of Speech doesn't mean a third of what some folks want it let them do--these usually being the same folks who want it only to be for them and not for anyone else. It's appalling what "Constitution lovers" don't know about the Constitution and how it actually plays out.

those pamphlets also contained come falsehoods about Islam... and even if they were entirely true, a school is no place to preach your religon or opposition to it

he has a right to do this.. as a private citizen... as a taxpayer funded legally bound civil servant he does not have that right to do it at work... have you ever heard of the sepereation of Church and state?

your right to freedom of speech.. does not trump someone elses right to an education without religous overtones

if you want a place where you can hand out religous tracts in class.. try Saudi Arabia

No he doesn't have the right. It wouldn't fall under Freedom of Speech. He's a teacher and strictly forbidden from talking religion with students. That's pretty universal. I'd be willing to bet in his conduct clause it contains something against it. Damn near every job, especially government ones, nullify the First Amendment for ya.

I'm Irish.. leprechauns are not people

unless you've actually met one

in that case.. your batshit crazy view of the world makes more sense

His argument BBS is specifically that nobody is paid to dress up as those characters.

ahhh..so he's okay with racist imagery... just as long as you dont dress like it

because we all know first nations women have never been fetihized

He might not even have the right to do it outside the school. Depends on what the conduct clauses of his contract say. Jobs like this often demand that their employees not participate in political issues like this because it will rebound on the office.

I couldn't engage in any outside political activity--couldn't even sign petitions-- when I worked for the federal government. I signed that "right" away.

Here in my town, a TV weatherman was fired the day before yesterday because he spoke to the city council on a contentious community issue. He was known as a TV weatherman. Taking sides in a controversial local political issue was seen as rebounding on the TV station and he was canned. They were able to do that because he had signed the right away to work for the TV station.

I don't know what is in the Texas school contracts on this, but an assumption that rights can't be and aren't being signed away to have such a job would be an incorrect assumption.

The ND mascot is a person and their logo is a pugnacious person, which comes from the team name "The Fighting Irish." They are not called "The fighting Leprechauns or anything like that.

Maybe you can tell me: What is the difference between calling the Notre Dame teams that and referring to the Florida State Seminoles.

It's not a person

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notre_Dame_Leprechaun

even Notre Dame says its a leprechaun

because leprechauns dont exist.... and Seminoles dont depict a caricature of a real existing person

What kind of warrior is that first picture? He has medium brown hair and blue eyes, so he can't be a native American.

yet, he can be dressed up as a plush toy and wear native american garb... somehow this isnt magically a racist caricature

what planet do you live on?

Those are logos, not mascots. Blackhawk is the name of an individual, besides being the name of a helicopter.

Besides which, they are the logos of professional sports franchises, NOT college.

ohhhh so it's okay to post racist caricatures... but only if done professionally
