Sarah's father was being unreasonable, as usual. When did he ever listen to a word she said? It infuriated her that he saw her as a little girl still. She was 22 for God's sake and he treated her like a child. She ran a hand through her mass of tumbling black curls in frustration. Her father sat there impassively, arms crossed, watching her pace back and forth.
"The man is an idiot father! His thoughts are that women should be kept in their place, knitting and hosting dinner parties for their husband and his boring friends. I won't marry him and it's ridiculous that you would expect me to! You're the one who taught me to read, you're the one who taught me basic sword skill. Why do that only to fob me of to a fool!" she cried. Her green eyes flashing in anger.
Malcolm, her father sighed and shook his head. "I'm sorry Sarah but you know my financial situation has not gotten any better, I can just about afford the few servants we have now and I'll have to let them go before long. He can provide for you. He's for a fery wealthy family... Anyway, it's what your mother would have wanted."
Megan turned on him, " don't you dare use guilt on me, mother's dead and she's not coming back. You can't expect me to-" her rant was cut short as the door flew open. One of the servants ran in, his face ashen and a sword drawn. Her father drew his own sword and jumped to his feet.
"Sir! ... The village is under attack. They're ransacking everything and killing as they go." The man glanced at her worryingly. Her father spun towards her and grasped her shoulder. " Sarah , I want you to use the hiding space beneath the bed in your room. And no matter what you hear, you don't come out." Megan's mouth opened to protest but he shook her," You do not move for anything, I'll get you when it's over."
"But father-"
"Go,now!"
Megan's eyes widened and without another word she span and ran from the room. Lifting her dress up from around her ankles, taking the stairs as fast as she could. She ran for her room at full speed. Slamming it shut behind her. She ran for the bed and slid across pulling at the planks and sliding her body down into the dark and cramped space. She could hear her own terrified breathing but she fought to quieten down. It suddenly sprung into her head that she had not told her father she loved him... But she'd be able to say it when this was all over. That is what she prayed for in that cramped hole as she muffled sounds of crashing furniture and clanging metal reached her ears.
