"Art, in itself, is an attempt to bring order out of chaos." by Stephen Sondheim

I found this quote while searching for others and it reminded me of a discussion I once had with my friend who was an artist. We were both in our senior year in college and discussing "life". He the artist said he observed nature and life around him and through his art attempted to make sense of it. I, the math and science major, also observed nature and life and tried using math (equations) and theories and hypotheses to make sense out of it. The light bulb went on as we realized we both used different tools to try and make sense of the chaos around us. We laughed and smoked another joint.

What really blows my mind is that all our equations can describe most of all of life the universe and everything. We still don't know everything, dark matter, string theory etc but we are getting there and with quantum computing we may find the answers. Have you ever thought that we could be one of a multiverse and our laws of physics may be unique to our universe, I can't imagine that being true because of how perfectly it fits together in this universe.

Mathematics is the building block of our civilisation, without it we would still be cave dwellers.

It does blow my mind as so much is new compared to when my formal education ended. I still feel art has a way of capturing those unknowns. I have a better appreciation for relationship of art and science.

I am going to go out on a limb here and will be prepared to be flamed for my outrages thoughts.

Art is guided by science, in the beginning religious scholars depicted a heaven in the clouds and then when Copernicus proffered that the sun was in the center of our galaxy artists changed their depiction of heaven. When Galileo made a telescope to see beyond the bounds of earth, the artists changed heaven again. And so it goes on. To me artists put on a medium what they can imagine and that imagination is expanded by science.

Good morning Chaos Dwellers!

I think the ties between art and the sciences are really cool. Both have the ability to alter your perception and change how you look at the world.

Years ago I read a great book on that time period - the 16th and 17th century, when we went from the closed world to the infinite universe. A fascinating tale. The continual shifting nature of our understanding of reality is mind-boggling.

Can you give me the name of the book?
I'm a reader. Don't get in trouble.

This evening it is Sweden against Spain in the UEFA women's league. This is an Olympic Games qualifier.

Sweden is ranked No.1 and Spain are the world champions, should be a good revenge game
