Characters and why I like them (Miyamoto Musashi) From Vagabond

I mentioned before that I am big fan of Samurai and their code of honor etc. This character name is Miyamoto Musashi, sound familiar? If not he’s an actual famous historical swordsman, he’s been portrayed in many types of books, cinema and animations, but my favorite interpretation thus far is from the manga series known as Vagabond.

Takehiko Inoue is the author and artist of the title and I just love his art style, it’s so realistic and alive very inspirational. In this series Takehiko unfolds the life of Mushahi from his early teens onwards to his adult hood, the series is still ongoing and this character has gone through many changes and developments throughout the different volumes.

At first Shinmen Takezo (Miyamoto Musashi birth name) seems like a teenager who only wants to kill and die an honorable death on the battle field, but later on down the line he changes his views on life and death and eventually he travels around Japan in order to become the strongest swordsman under the sun. This is a fictional telling of Musashi’s life, so more than half of this stuff is in the manga is not accurate to his actual life.

Growing up and watching Bruce Lee and other martial art movies was one of the best parts about my childhood and still to this day I love martial art movies and Asian cinema in general. Growing up I also read comic books and I found myself always drawn to the lesser known characters. Around the year 2006 or so I noticed that Marvel comics was publishing a book called Immortal Ironfist, I had heard of the character Ironfist before but never really got the chance to read about the character, because frankly Marvel was not giving him any spot light they were focused on their big guns, Spiderman, X-men, Hulk, Avengers, Fantastic Four Etc.

But with Immortal Ironfist being launched I could finally find out more about this character and his mythos and man was I blown away. Immortal Ironfist took a very obscure character and turned him from a C-Lister to a great B-Lister, Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction really impressed me and the artwork by David Aja fit the book perfectly.

This was just the type of character I was searching for, he was a superhero but also a martial artist an awesome combination. His costume is pretty simplistic the yellow and green really work for his design, Marvel also recently gave a him a white and gold look which also looked badass on him. I also loved his friendship with Luke Cage (another character I’ll be talking about later on) and his love interest Misty Knight which is kind of a back forth fling.

Plunging his fists into the molten heart of the dragon Shou-Lao the Undying infused the dragon's superhuman energy into Rand; this along with training by Lei Kung the Thunderer gave Rand the power of the Iron Fist, allowing him to summon and focus his chi (or natural energy) and enhance his natural abilities to extraordinary levels. His strength, speed, stamina, durability, agility, and reflexes and senses can all be astronomically intensified, making his already formidable martial arts skills even more so.

His fighting style is also really cool, there were panels in the comic that had references to Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do and his one inch punch which was really cool. The power of the Ironfist takes a lot of focus and energy and I loved that they showed Danny being vulnerable after he used up a good portion of his Chi, it made him all the more human.

In terms of personality Danny is a very laid back guy which was another draw to the character, he wasn’t overly geeky like Spiderman or too much of a badass like say Wolverine he was the perfect blend of both. When It came time to get serious Danny was no joke, I’ve seen this guy beat up opponents much bigger and more aggressive than he is and with considerable ease.

I am happy that Marvel given this character major spotlight and he’s proven to be a very likable character and he’s got a good fan following. I think I heard somewhere that he’s getting a movie which would be very cool and he’s also appeared in some video games such as Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 and Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. Han Solo-watching the original star wars most of us would probably be like Luke, but all of us would want the swagger, the world-wary roguish charm of that scruffy lookin' nerf-herder. As much as star wars is about jedi and sith, lightsaber duels and space battles. It's also about a man who only ever cared about himself, his Wookie co-pilot, and his ship learning to care about something greater than himself.
A Skywalker may be the hero but Han Solo is the heart and soul of Star Wars.

Characters and why I like them (Red Hood/Jason Todd)

First Off Jason was the second Robin right after Dick Grayson, among many fans at the time he was not very well liked, so in order to fix that DC decided to have a vote that would determine weather Jason lived or died and majority voted death and he was killed off. Now looking back on this, I still say it was a very poor decision to have the fan-base vote if a character lives or dies and I believe the company would agree seeing how they have not pulled a stunt like that every since.

Prior to the release of Batman #617 (cover dated September 2003), a page of art from the issue by artist Jim Lee circulated the Internet, apparently revealing the mystery villain Hush, who was the focus of Lee and writer Jeph Loeb's "Hush" storyline, as a resurrected Jason Todd. The following month's Batman #618 (October 2003) revealed that the appearance of Todd was in fact a ruse by the villain Clayface under the direction of the Riddler and Hush. Loeb explained, "I always liked Jason, liked the idea that Batman had a Robin who died in the line of duty and how that would motivate anyone to continue their quest. It would also be the most recent, most painful thing he had to endure. That's why Hush played the card—to get inside Batman's head... But 'Hush' wasn't about Jason—Jason was a pawn to be moved around the table... If someone else wanted to tell another Jason story or bring him back and we at least opened the door, that's great!

In 2005 writer Judd Winick began the Under the Hood storyline that revolved around the mystery of the identity of the new Red Hood. The character's identity was revealed as Todd in Batman #638. Winick explained that after his initial arc on the Batman title, he suggested doing "something big" to his editors. Specifically, he wanted to bring Jason Todd back from the dead. Winick said, "I was less interested in the how and the why and the what of Jason Todd returning from the dead than I am about what Jason’s return will do to Batman. Now."

Jason has had many persona's such as a murderous version of Nightwing, Red Robin and even a killer version of Batman and Grant Morrison has his take on the character in his Batman and Robin run in 2010.

Now the thing I've really like about Jason since he's been back is in many ways he represents the audience point of view in the Batman Universe. He is the one who ask questions like "why won't Batman kill the Joker?" "Why put criminals in Arkham Asylum when they should be put on death row?" These are the same questions that Judd Winick put in the animated movie Batman Under The Red Hood(which is a much more improved version of the under the hood story line he wrote when he brought Jason back, he wrote the story so that it made more since.)

Batman Under The Red Hood was very well received, so much so that Judd returned to the character again and gave us Red Hood Lost Days, a six issue mini series which goes into more detail about how Jason came back from the dead and his lead up to becoming Red Hood. The popularity of this character has really grown over the past few years, some say he's become the DC Punisher, some say he should have stayed dead but I am not one of them.

Recently Winick has written a 3 issue Batman and Robin story arc involving Jason again and him becoming Red Hood once more. Jason may be Batman's greatest failure, but in modern times Jason has become a very ingenious character, he's the one member of the Batman family who is willing to take it to the bad guys as hard as they bring it to the good guys. He's morally ambiguous and I like that their is a character like this in the Batman universe and in DC comics period. That is the character of Jason Todd and why I like him. Characters why I like them [The Darkness]

Jackie is a very cool character, even at an early age he was not really afraid of much, he was an orphan and joined the mob at an early age. As he got older he became the mobs number one hit man and was damn good at what he did, at the age of 21 like all blood members of the family he gained the powers of The Darkness.

The darkness is a gift and a curse, on one hand it allows you to do anything in the dark, the wielder can shape shift, create any type of weapon etc as long as it's in the dark. The downside is the wielder is no longer able to have sex, if the wielder does have sex they will die and The Darkness powers will be passed on to the next available blood line relative, mainly a male is chosen.

Despite his hard and violent life Jackie is not without a heart, he has morals and codes he follows even if the people he works with does not share his moral codes, in fact he actually killed Uncle Paulie the man who broomed Jackie as a little boy into the Mob and killed his entire Franchetti crew. His childhood friend Jenny was killed and Jackie lost apart of his soul, he said it felt like he died a second time.

Now remember how I said he is not able to have sex? Well believe it or not Jackie is a father, His daughter name is Hope Pezzini she was conceived by The Darkness and Sara Pezzini (bearer of The Witchblade another character I'll be talking about later on). The Darkness wished to create a new weapon with which to destroy its adversary, The Angelus. When the current Angelus host Celestine and her warriors attempt to take the unborn child by force, Jackie takes them to a mob safe house to hide from them. Patience (The Magdalena) also arrives, after Sara leaves her a message asking for help.

Sara goes into labour and Dani acts as midwife while Jackie and Patience fend off a new assault by The Angelus. Hope's birth nearly kills Sara, but Dani heals her using The Witchblade and it is split between them. Celestine manages to grab hold of Hope, but the baby creates an explosion that destroys all the Angelus warriors and Celestine leaves in defeat. Characters and why I like them (Spawn /Albert Francis "Al" Simmons)

I have a lot of history with this character and the mythology of Spawn in general. As a kid Spawn was the first comic book I picked up, I loved the costume and just the overall creepy feeling of it. Al Simmons is a guy who worked as an assassin but he was betrayed by the people he worked for and was killed as a result. He was giving a deal by a very powerful demon known as Malebolgia, Al said yes to the deal and was brought back to life as a general in Hells army a Hell Spawn.

In the beginning when he was resurrected the memories of his previous life were gone, but as time went on he eventually remember his life. Al was not only a hell Spawn, but he was the chosen one, his powers begin to grow more and more so much so that even the higher ups in both Heaven and Hell began to fear him and what he could become.

I love the fact that Al didn’t choose a side between Heaven or Hell, he figured screw both of them because to him they were both corrupt and untrustworthy. Thanks to a power upgrade given to him by M.O.M (Man Of Miracles) he was able to defeat both God and Satan and remade the world. But despite saving the world he still had to remain Spawn and could never go back to his wife, friends and family. Characters why I like them [Zuko]

Well Zuko is a character that has had to struggle since his birth, his father Ozai said to him once that his sister Azula was born lucky and that Zuko was lucky to be born. Zuko has been trying to gain the approval of his father and never got it, in fact he got the complete opposite, Zuko being a prince of the Fire Nation was asked to attend a war council meeting by his uncle Iroh, but Zuko did something disrespectful in his father eye’s he spoke during the meeting when he asked to stay quite. Zuko being no older than thirteen was asked to have an Agni Kai(A fire nation duel).

He agreed, unaware he would face his father, not the general he insulted. Upon turning to face his opponent, he was immediately penitent and knelt, refusing to fight, and tearfully begged for his father's forgiveness. Ozai declared his refusal a sign of cowardice and another display of disrespect, and told him "he will learn respect, and suffering will be his teacher."

Ozai burned Zuko (permanently scarring the left side of his face), stripped him of his birthright, and exiled him from his beloved homeland. Declaring that he could only return if he was able to find and capture the Avatar, who disappeared one hundred years before.

As he got older and wiser and started to see the fire nation for what it was, he started to realize what a corrupt nation it was and he had change of heart and betrayed his nation and help bring his father and his sister down stopping them from taking over the world. I love characters like Zuko who have done wrong in the past but change their ways through out a series.

He realized that his uncle was more of a father to him than his actual father had ever been. Zuko made friends with Aang The Avatar the person he swore he would capture in order to gain his fathers approval, he is now the current Fire Lord and plans the change things for the better. Characters why I like them [Wonderwoman]

Created by William Moulton Marston. She first appeared in All Star Comics #8. I was first introduced to the character of Diana Prince aka Wonderwoman through a comic book one shot called “Wonderwoman Spirit Of Truth” written by Paul Dini and drawn by Alex Ross, the book gave me a completely different look on the character. Before that I thought of Wonderwoman as just a superheroine who just hated men and was out to prove she was just as good if not better than the male counter part superheroes like Batman or Superman.

I quickly found out that under good writers Wonderwoman was not that type of character at all, I began to do my research on the character more and more read books such as Wonder Woman: The Hiketeia, Wonderwoman: Love and Murder, Wonderwoman: Gods and Mortals, Wonderwoman: Eyes Of Gorgon, Wonderwoman Land Of The Dead. The character to me had become more of role model character for not only Women but for people in general probably more so than Batman and Superman.

Wonderwoman being a female character gets a lot of animosity from male fans, they see her as being intimidating or being useless simply because she is female. Personally I find the people that hate on the character are either afraid of strong female characters or have never really given the character a chance. Now the old television series staring Linda Carter was fun for it’s time, but I think comics and most of the cartoons have done a great job of representing the character. If Batman is The Dark Knight that inspires fear in criminals and Superman is the Man Of Steel that inspires hope in others, Wonderwoman is all about peace, love and equality all very enduring qualities.

Now she is sexy, beautiful and all that jazz but it’s her personality and qualities that make her such a timeless character. Like many characters Wonderwoman has had many costume changes. I really want a modern day Wonderwoman movie and soon, we’ve seen the male heroes on screen I think it’s time the First lady of comics got her shine on as well, they tried with a new tv show but that was a total failure so bad it didn’t even air on TV, I saw the pilot online and it was just pure trash. The animated movie I thought was pretty decent, enjoy pictures of the Themyscira Warrior Princess below. (pronounced Them-mes-skera). Characters and why I like them (Roronoa Zoro)

I’ve always had a fascination with samurai and the samurai code of honor and I’ve always thought pirates were cool. Zoro is both a swordsman and a Pirate. What I love about him is his unbreakable spirit to achieve his goal as the strongest swordsman in the world. Visually he is very unique, he fights with three swords, one in both hands and one in his mouth, not to mention he sports the color green my favorite color so he gets major points for that.

Black Panther (T'Challa)

He is a fictional character in the Marvel Comics universe. Created by writer-editor Stan Lee and penciller-co-plotter Jack Kirby, he first appeared in Fantastic Four #52 (July 1966). He is the first black superhero in mainstream American comics, debuting several years before such early African-American superheroes as Marvel's the Falcon and Luke Cage, and DC Comics' Tyroc, Black Lightning and John Stewart(Green Lantern)


Powers and abilities

The title "Black Panther" is a rank of office, chieftain of the Wakandan Panther Clan. As chieftain, the Panther is entitled to eat a special heart-shaped herb which, in addition to his mystical connection with the Wakandan Panther god, grants him superhumanly acute senses and increases his strength, speed, stamina, and agility to the peak of human development. He has since lost this connection and forged a new one with another unknown Panther deity, granting him augmented physical attributes as well as a resistance to magic.[51] His senses are so powerful that he can pick up a prey's scent and memorize tens of thousands of individual ones.

As king of Wakanda, the Panther has access to a vast collection of magical artifacts, advanced Wakandan technological and military hardware, as well as the support of his nation's wide array of scientists, warriors, and mystics. The Wakandan military has been described as one of the most powerful on Earth. His attire is the sacred vibranium costume of the Wakandan Panther Cult.
He is a skilled hunter, tracker, strategist, politician, inventor, and scientist—he has a Ph.D. degree in physics from Oxford University. Considered one of the eight smartest people on the planet, he is a genius in physics and advanced technology, and is a brilliant inventor.
T'Challa is a rigorously trained gymnast and acrobat, showing mastery in various African martial arts as well as contemporary ones and fighting styles that belong to no known disciplines. In the miniseries Doomwar, he created a new form of martial arts incorporating both science and sorcery.

In Volume 3, writer Christopher Priest expanded the Panther's day-to-day arsenal to include equipment such as an "energy dagger", a vibranium-weave suit, and a portable supercomputer, the "Kimoyo card." In Volume 4, writer Reginald Hudlin introduced such specialized equipment as "thrice-blessed armor" and "light armor" for specific tasks, and for a short while outfitted him with the Ebony Blade of the Black Knight.

Now on the reason I like him. T'Challa is one of those characters that could have been another brick in the wall but he's not at all. Marvel has done a great job with putting him in the lime light, he's very compassionate but at the same time can be a very dangerous warrior in battle, he is after all the most dangerous man on earth in the Marvel universe.

I love his look visually, his costume is very cool in my opinion. I think after the Avengers Marvel needs to give this guy a movie and have Michael Jai White play him. But I also think he is a very three dimensional character and feels like an actual person and King/leader. The adopted heir of Kouga Danjou who assumes leadership of the clan following his grandfather's death. An idealist and scholar who believes in looking to the future instead of being dominated by the past, Gennosuke views the pursuit of any grudge to be an ultimately pointless and self-destructive practice. He adheres to his ideals even after learning of the Hattori Truce's absolvement, prompting him to lead the Kouga on an expedition to Sunpu to plead with former Shogun Ieyasu and Hattori Hanzo to reinstate the treaty before any further bloodshed occurs. Yet despite being a man of peace, if pushed into a corner Gennosuke is more than capable of killing anyone who threatens him or his clansmen. In addition to his skill with the sword, Gennosuke wields a power passed down his bloodline called Dojutsu.

First off I really like his character design very cool. Second I like the character because he's the silent but deadly type. He wants nothing more than peace but he is forced to play his hand and resort to violence.
