"Absolutely not," Kell muttered, reaching over to take Kate's hand. While his reaction was calm, Kate would know that his heart was racing just at the suggestion of her going to battle. He knew she was plenty able, but he would never let her take the front lines of battle.

"Khelt, you knew when you married me that there was little even you could do to stop me from going to battle." Kate said softly as her husband took her hand, squeezing it tightly even if he remained calm on the outside.

"Not while our cub is so young," Kell murmured. "I don't want it growing up without a mother."

"Our cub isn't even here, Khelt. You aren't going to place restrictions on me before they have even arrived." Kate said, bristling at the idea that he would keep her from doing anything.

Before Kell could remind her she had already pushed herself too far, Brogan spoke up. "Kids," he murmured. "Don' let th'strain o' this situation make you start fightin' with each other. Kate, you an' Kell are a team, an' I think I speak fer everyone here when I say we don' want th'baby t'miss out on either parent. Y'need t'keep goin' easy til it's arrived. Then we can get you back into th'fight. Kell... Y'have good intentions, I know. But nothin' thrives hidden away in th'dark, even if it's fer their own protection. All you can do is keep 'er safe as possible while she does what she needs t'do. Y'may well find tha' you'll 'ave t'let go sometimes an' hope fer th'best. You both 'ave a country an' a cub t'protect above all now."

Kate looked between her father and her husband, still angry that Kell would even suggest that he would keep her from her duties for the sake of their child. "Well, excuse me. I think I'll retire for the afternoon."

She pushed herself out of the chair, kissing her father's cheek on her way out of the room. Fiona watched as Kate retreated down the hall towards her rooms and looked to Kell, chuckling softly.

"She certainly lives up to the temper that red hair brings." Fiona said softly, squeezing Sam's hand.

Kell rose slowly as Kate left, watching her go with those sharp golden eyes that seemed to soften slightly. Brogan gave him a smile. "Wait a few minutes, lad. Then she migh' no' kick you out."

"If she would just be reasonable, I wouldn't feel like keeping her away from battle was my only option," Kell sighed.

"Y'married a Ghis, Kell. It's all 'r nothing fer us."

After about a half-hour, Kell finally came to Kate's chambers, opening the door and closing it behind him quietly. He made his way in, leaving her be for the moment as he drew letters from his jacket and went to the desk to file them away.

Kate was ignoring him on purpose, lying on the bed with her back turned towards the door. She was slightly wounded by his admissions, but she was determined to not let that show. He had no idea how useless she already felt since she had been confined to bed, but his words had struck an already raw nerve.

Kell took his time sorting the letters before he finally laid aside his jacket and vest and the harness he wore with his knives. He slowly made his way toward the bed and sat down on the edge. With a soft murmur of, "Sit up, love," he lifted her up and began massaging her sore back as he'd been doing often since the weight of the baby had become strenuous.

"This won't make me forget how upset I am with you, Khelt." Kate said as he helped her to sit up, massaging her sore back as she slowly started to relax.

"I know," he answered simply, coaxing her muscles into relaxation until she could rest against him easily. He then let his arms drape around her middle, his hands resting on her belly. His head laid on her shoulder and he simply stared forward out the window across the room, as the light outside was just beginning to turn orange.

Kate relaxed back against Kell as he held her belly in his hands, their child kicking gently at the contact. She let out a soft sigh, her eyes closing as she nuzzled against his neck.

"I don't know if I'm ready to be a mother. Everything just seems to be happening at the wrong time." Kate said softly. "My soldiers need me there with them and I can't be. Not until this baby comes and it seems as if they are stubborn enough to hang on until the very bitter end."

"It's a bit late to turn back now," Kell murmured. "But once the baby is here... We'll figure it out... I know your father is right, and I know you're right... I can't just leave you locked away with an army of guards and expect you to ever be happy or feel at all fulfilled. It just... Terrifies me, to think of you going to battle. And I'm even more afraid for our cub, for it to lose one of us..."

"Kell, I'm the queen of Scotland and you are my Lord Protector. Our lives will always been in danger, even in times of peace. There is always a chance that our child might have to grow up without one of us, but it will always know who we are. My Ma and Da would see to that. Your grandfather would see to that. It would have no end to the supply of people who love it and care for it." Kate said softly as Kell expressed his fears for the future as well.

Kell gently laid Kate back down, laying close behind her with her back to his chest. "So I suppose I'll always be secretly stressed about it all. But then again, I did marry you. I signed up for it," he smiled and pressed a kiss to her shoulder over her mating mark.

"There's absolutely no going back now." Kate said as he pressed a kiss over her mating mark. "And no matter how much you upset me, there is nowhere else that I'd rather be than right here with you. I'm afraid you've ruined me for other men."

"Good," Kell murmured. "Because you're mine." Kell was rarely possessive, but when he was, it was usually in bed. His voice had lowered to a soft, teasing growl. It rarely took them very long to make up after disagreements, and when they did, Kell usually offered his apologies and understanding in the form of taking her to bed.

"Are you possessive, eldere?" Kate asked with a grin as Kell growled out his response. "Because I seem to remember a time not that long ago when we shared our bed with someone else. I had never seen you that attentive before."

The couple had invited a mutual friend to share a night shortly before they had come to Inverness. In fact, the night with Ryssa was probably shortly before Kate had gotten pregnant. Kell had watched the two women and then joined them, loving them both until they were unable to move. Then he had loved Kate over the next few days until she had begged for mercy.

"You are my wife and my mate. She... Well, I don't think we've all quite figured out what she is in this situation yet," Kell muttered, though Kate could feel him begin to harden at the memory of that night. He had been neutral about the idea up until Kate invited Ryssa to their chambers and he watched the two of them pleasure one another. After that, he'd been completely on board both for his own sake and for Kate's as she'd seemed to enjoy having both male and female attention.

"You're still the only one that gives me butterflies when you touch my naked skin." Kate murmured as she turned her head and captured her husband's lips in a passionate kiss. "Being with another woman was a fantasy and I'm happy that we did it, but being with you is all that I need."

"I know you miss her," Kell gave her a little smirk. "Maybe we ought to make her a part of our usual entourage. For my Queen's sake, of course." Kell's fingers trailed down over her dress, drawing up the edge and mimicking what Ryssa had done that night, gently coaxing Kate into the very new territory of being with a woman. When his fingers touched her bare thigh, Kell nipped gently at her earlobe and stroked her bare skin lightly.

"I think you miss her more." Kate said as her husband smirked at her. "I've never seen those golden eyes of your sharper than they were as she settled between my thighs."

Kate let out a gasp as Kell drew her dress up her legs, his fingers soon stroking over the bare skin of her inner thighs. A soft moan soon followed as he nipped at her ear, giving her a bit of pain with the pleasure that he had promised.

"I look forward to seeing her again," Kell admitted. "Not only for the show you two put on, but for the thrill of having two beautiful women in my arms." His fingers slipped past her underwear easily, lightly skimming her moistened folds. "You seemed to enjoy it too, watching me finish her off once I was done with you. You wanted another round once you saw that."

"I'm sure that our child was made in the days that followed. It was the spark that we needed to relax and enjoy one another." Kate said, sighing as his fingers rubbed over her wet folds. "Gods, eldere. You are driving me wild."

Kate only begged for anything in bed. Out of the bedroom, she was strong and confident. In bed with Kell, she melted and let her guard down. It was where they each saw one another in the truest sense. Bringing in Ryssa was simply an extension of that, especially after they had talked about it for a long time.

"Good," he growled darkly against her ear just before his fingers began to circle her clit so achingly slowly. His other arm wrapped beneath her was holding her still, his hand resting over her clothed breast just.to tease her more. He ground lightly against her bottom, his shaft hard and straining for her.
