Roman snorted somewhat pitifully before settling at Fiona's side. It was Ciaran who soon joined her, offering a kind smile. The last time they'd talked, it had turned into an argument, but he still seemed as kind and even-tempered as ever.

"How are things since we spoke last?" He asked softly.

"Better." Fiona said as Ciaran came back to join her. "Your brother is doing his level best to convince me that we should be together. I keep thinking he'll change his mind one of these days when he realizes just what the situation is."

"Sam's very decisive and he makes good decisions. I know most of us agree with him on this one." He sat back against the step with a content smile. "It's nice to see his eyes so bright and hopeful again. I haven't seen that since before Rho lost his arm."

"I think we're falling in love." She said softly, looking towards Ciaran with a long sigh. "At least that's what it feels like."

"You certainly look like it. Enjoy the ride, love, it's something not a lot of people are lucky enough to have. Sam will take good care of you if you let him."

"I don't know if I can just let him do anything for me." Fiona murmured, looking at Ciaran with a shrug of her shoulders. "I've taken care of myself for so long it's a little strange to let someone else do it for once."

"The same will probably go for him. Not that there hasn't been anyone around to care for him, he just never wanted to let anyone do it."

Ciaran glanced out at the town before them. "You know he really tried hard not to fall in love. He's always trying to convince himself that his job is too important to deal with silly things like love and sentiment. But I think he just needed to meet the right person."

"And how are you all so sure that I'm the right person? Everyone seems to see something that I don't. I feel like he overwhelms me. That feeling makes me weak at the knees and I can't think of anything else besides the two of us in that moment." Fiona admitted. "I'm not sure if I like it all that much."

"That's one of the best feelings in the world," Ciaran muttered with a smile, lost in thought for a moment. But then he added, "You'll find that we just want what's best for Sam. And if he's happy and lively because you're opening him up like even our Ma never could, we'd like to think you're good for him. The last time he began to feel any of that, he talked himself out of loving a perfectly wonderful girl whose family has known and loved ours for generations. Sam wasn't himself for two years after he made himself let her go. But with you... Sam believes he can be happy and still be a protector for Inverness. He doesn't have to choose between love, family, and responsibility.

"He doesn't have to protect me, but it seems like he's doing his level best to do just that." Fiona said as Ciaran explained that Sam had loved and let that woman go in the past. "I suppose I put too much thought into the bad things that might happen and have a hard time accepting the good things that are happening."

"Sam does the same. I can't tell you the number of nights he's sat up with Kate trading worries with her. One of his greatest fears is that you won't come back if you find your family in Sweden," Ciaran told her quietly.

Fiona glanced at Ciaran as he told her that Sam thought that she might not come back from Sweden. She had never considered that as a possibility. It would be nice to have a family that wanted her, but she wasn't going to get her hopes up.

"He has nothing to worry about." Fiona said quietly, looking down at the toes of her slippers.

"He'll worry anyway, dear. It's what Samuel Ghis does." Ciaran patted her hand lightly. "He takes after Da a little too much some days." He stood as Justin stepped out, the two linking arms to go for a little walk while Heather was talking to Gerald and Ria. Sam soon left Heather to Vincenzo and came outside to check on the horses and Kennah, offering a smile to Fiona as he passed her to come join him.

Fiona gave him a smile in returned as he went to check on Kennah. Roman rumbled and lifted his head from his hands, watching as Sam interacted with the other drake. Soon, he was up on his feet, nudging at Sam to get the same kind of attentions.

"He's a little jealous." Fiona said with a laugh.

"I think 'e's more jealous tha' Kennah loves me," Sam chuckled as Kennah snorted at Roman to leave Sam be, but Sam reached out to stroke Roman's scales. "If I 'ave t'be nice t'everyone, so d'you, love," he muttered to Kennah, placing a kiss on her nose.

"He likes her and she likes him. She just has a strong sense of duty." Fiona said as she pushed herself off her seat to join Sam's side. "A little bit like you, I suppose."

"A lot like me. But like me, she needs t'learn how t'balance responsibility with enjoyin' 'er life too," Sam murmured. It was a conversation he had with Julia all too often when she was worried he was making himself miserable.

"So, are you admitting that you enjoy life with me around?" Fiona asked, giving him a smile that made her blue eyes sparkle with mirth.

"That's a pretty big thing to admit." She said with a smile as he cupped her cheek and kissed her gently.

Fiona closed her eyes and let out a sigh. Sam could kiss her senseless all he liked. It made her entirely happy.

"No use denyin' it," Sam turned to face her fully and drew her into his arms for another lovely kiss. "An' what about you?"

"I might be convinced." She murmured as he hugged her tightly and kissed her senselessly. "Especially when you kiss me like this."

"It's startin' t'become one o'my favorite things t'do with you." Sam murmured, then chuckled at himself. "Gods, I sound like my Da..."

"I think I love you, Samuel." Fiona confessed out of the blue, her cheeks burning brightly as she made that confession.

The surprise in Sam's face lasted for only seconds before it gave way to the most adoring gaze Fiona had ever received from the normally tough lawman. He pressed one more warm kiss to her lips before murmuring, "I think I love you too, Fiona..."
