"Dr. Simon," Claire's voice came over the intercom, interrupting my thoughts, "the new patient is here to see you."
I rubbed my eyes tiredly and picked my glasses up off the mahogany desk in my office, placing them on the bridge of my nose. I rose from my desk and made sure my area was prepared for the first-time meeting with a new patient. I liked to ensure that there was a pitcher of ice water nearby along with two glasses (plastic of course, the mentally deranged had a habit of being unpredictable), and of course my trusty leather notebook and a foutain-tip pen for taking notes. The rest of the office should be very clean and clear of distractions - especially when you hadn't yet learned a patient's personality yet it always helped to minimize distractions in order to keep them focused on the tasks at hand - diagnosis and treatment.
I walked back to my desk and held the intercom button.
"Please send her in Claire."
I walked back to stand in front of my desk, assuming a non-threatening stance in order to make her feel comfortable in a new environment.
The door opened and I waited with anticipation to see who would walk through...
