Coming Together - vetting of stories

dr_mabeuse said:
Not to offend, but are people really submitting their best work for these volumes, or are they just throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks?

Every not-so-good or doesn't-have-a-chance story you add to the list drains time and attention away from the quality ones, and the longer the list gets, the more forbidding and difficult the vetting gets.

I was under the impression that this was supposed to be a collection of personal bests, no?

I agree with you, doc. However, I'm not sure how to fairly limit submissions. I've just been trusting folks to submit only their favorites/best, and the vetting process to help the cream rise to the top. Still, it does hamper the process to have so many to wade through.

And I'm guilty of tossing a fair # of stories into the pool. However, I do believe each "worthy."

I only put two of mine in the list simply because I honestly think those are the only stories I have up so far that are worth putting into a book. I have a couple I'm still working on that might be okay for some later volume(s), but as of right now, those are the only stories I'd feel comfortable having "out there."

They're also my personal favorites. :)

It seems to me to be a matter of everyone exercising a little self-restraint for the good of the group. I mean, let's face it, not all of our stories are jems, and part of being a writer is knowing what to leave out.

So let us all hang together here, or as Thomas Paine or someone said, we will all surely hang alone.

Hey Cloudy, your only two appear in the same two volumes as my only two. Kewl.

I might be biased, but I love both of yours, and it's bloody great to be sitting alongside them (before anyone gets upset, or yells at me, I tend to read quite selectively, within certain categories, and I read a lot of paperbacks. There aren't enough hours in the day to read loads here, and write loads).

There ARE many other stories which I also love, within all of the anthologies, but I'm not gonna start listing any more. ;) Besides which, I'll be buying all of them anyway. :)

I'd noticed that - serendipity, eh?

(I love yours too  )

I gotta read some more, but I have three stories in the works, and about five stories from folks waiting on edits. Busy, busy, busy.

I put 1 (one) story up following a request from Imp for something short as a 'stocking filler' - thus far, no-one appears to have read it.

Oi! I did, well over a year ago! :p

(I just saw this post and went to read it, cos I always enjoy what you write. As I was reading it, it felt familiar. Anyway, I read it, then went to add a public comment, when much to my surprise, there was already a public comment there by me! )

I'll PM Imp and say I've vetted it. It does deserve to be in a volume of the anthology. ;)

My sincere groveling lick your boots (and anything else thrusting my way) apology. I meant anyone vetting for VOL IV. :D

Your comments are always welcome.

I should find things to whinge to you about more often. :D :p

Well, it worked then, cos I've vetted it! ;)

Do y'all want to consider an "expiration date" of sorts for vetting? In other words, perhaps 2-3 months on the submissions list & then, if not vetted, removal?

Or, would you prefer to see a tally of endorsements in the table so that you can read those which are closer to being vetted?

More work for me ... but now that volume 1 is just about hatched, I may be able to handle it.

Maybe the time limit thing is a good idea, but it could be that some real gems get missed that way.

I don't think you should list the number of endorsements a story has so far, because that could prejudice what some might read (even if merely subconsciously).

This might be a little work for you, too, but could you not ask those who have say over three titles in the vetting list to contact you and tell you what you think are their absolute best? I do think the list needs cutting down somewhat, because I must admit, I do look at the list and don't know where to begin reading.

Lou - bribes accepted. ;)

I'd be happy to have a volunteer to help out with this one! Any takers?

Would y'all want to see, perhaps, an asterisk next to those which are close to vetting (e.g., 7 or more endorsements)?

I would like to see some kind of marking for the stories that are close. But that's just a personal preference; I would probably start with those stories first.
I agree with Tatelou that it would be great if people narrowed down to their best two or three.
What happened to the idea of people having to vet in order to be included? That might motivate some people to read (or motivate them to pull their stories).

Agreed completely. I htink a lot of dobbing stories are being submitted. I selected my absolute favourite, as I though it should be one each. I have only recently submitted my second and thato nly because I feel that hte Anthology might be well served by a Writer's Resource.

The Earl

I have to say that after going through the list I was surprised that some people had submitted mutiple chapter pieces. While some of those were very good, unless a given chapter can stand on its own, it's rather pointless to put one chapter in alone. And putting three or four chapters of a story into one book sort of defeats having a mix of authors.

Between illness and other emergencies I have been remiss. tellme though, how do you go about vetting a story? Do I just read it and offer comments or point out any errors I see or what?

You can pm the author with any suggestions and if you think it's good enough for one of the volumes, then pm Imp and tell her you endorse it.

I only submitted 2 stories. Both I think are examples of my best work and both were rated above a 4.70 when they were posted on Lit. I wouldn't just throw out anything, but it does seem that some people have done so. I know there are some stories that I am not going to vet because I don't think they are of the calibur we want for the book.

Please! I stand behind my stories or I wouldn't have suggested them in the first place. All three of them are not only H-rated but have generated lots of feedback. Survival I and II received praise from a minister. I still hear from people who're read it and liked it.

Speaking for myself, I had three stories (out of about 110) entered and you asked for more anal stories and gay stories. I then entered three more. I think it would be a good idea to say how many endorsements individual stories have. If one of mine is obviously not going anywhere, I will take it back. If there are some by others that are close, I will read them and offer an opinion. I have been active in this for the last few days.

I would have no problem volunteering for this but I don't know what would be involved. Would it be just keeping score of the endorsements and updating the number for each story?

I'll volunteer - put me to work please!

No, the suggestion by Tatelou was to contact each author with more than 3 titles on the submission list and ask them to selectively weed it down.
