Comments that leave you shaking your head

Oddly, my most commented-upon work hasn't seen any new comments in three and a half months and I got three comments in under a day that washed ashore this morning. I know there's comment-moderation, but these weren't at the same time. Last two were an hour apart, about 8 hours after the first.



The slow build-up was the whole point.

'Uptight'... I guess trying not to poke your sister comes across as 'uptight' (Spoiler Alert: it was in T/I, he eventually does! )

Not sure what the commenter wanted for an ending... they boned for a day and a half, she invited him down to her place for the next weekend.



I was going to make fun of this. It was a term of endearment by the POV, MMC.

I never really noticed, but he does call her that (in dialog) quite a few times. Not sure why that's an issue. Usually in T/I, the norm is for the two main characters to frequently refer to each other by their relationship: as mom, or dad, or sis, or bro, or cuz, or BIL/SIL, or whatever. You know, just in case the reader forgets what category they're reading in.



I'm a Star Wars fan, and I make fun of them/us in the story (especially the attention the Slave Leia costume gets), but I'm wondering, here...

Trashy "joke." What kind of messed up couple gets turned on by cheating? I see a divorce in their future.

I would suggest that a couple who role plays together is far less likely to divorce.

I picture this commenter calling the cops because their partner put on a wig or a mask for roleplaying, it's possible that they don't have cognitive object permanence

I think he wasn't paying attention because I was disappointed in her behaviour... until I hit the plot switch at the end. Then I thought - clever couple!

I think it's safe to say, most of the stories here are fantasy. Mine certainly are.

I swear some readers do it on purpose. Read something they're not interested in. The question is, do they do it to punish themselves and the writer? Makes no sense.

Got my first comment on AWoS in three weeks late last night and I have to wonder what the goal was:

Well crap! I came back here to tell you I honestly started dropping my i-pad after two pages . I was bored and started nodding off. BUT….first I read the comments of other posters. Many of them said it was slow at first and then it got really good. SHAZAM! Just that quickly I got a severe case of FOMO. So now I will return to page #3 and read a while longer. I promise I will post another comment after I finish this.

Just finish the thing and then decide to comment or not.

Got a vote on it at about the same time. Looks like a 4*. No idea if it's the same commenter, though the odds are it was.

I'm shocked! He came through and added another comment at the 18 hour mark!

Thought I needed to post it in chapters. He already said the first two pages put him to sleep, so I can't imagine how breaking it up would help anything.

The first encounter was at about 12K-words and the first sex at about 25K, IIRC.

And, of course, he's tossed one more log on the 'ditch the movie from the last millennium commentary' fire. (I did rather like his use of 'movies from last Millennium'.)

Thank you @joy_of_cooking for liking that part. It was roughly 5% of the word count.

And, in my own defense, I've already put an Author Note at the start of my WIP to say it's slow burn.

1. Be thankful for any comments. 2. They did - they found the start slow, but the comments from others has inspired them to go back and finish reading it. 3. I would have appreciated that information.

I've had comments take over 48 hours to pass moderation!

Clearly no one reads the tags. I'll have to start putting disclaimers in an Author's Note at the beginning of each story, now.

I think TAGS are used to find stories. I rarely check them. If it's a slow burn story, then putting that in the introduction as a service, not a defence, is worth doing. If the story has elements that may be confusingly different between the UK and USA, I note that as well to save confusion.
I reserve the right to be (proved) wrong.

I actually love that he did that. Dunno about his feedback, but the idea of someone saying 'I didn't like this, but other people told me to give it a chance, so I'm going to do my best' -- that's kind of great, actually.

Edit: on the subject of tags, the only tags I ever read are Annabelle Hawthorne's, and only for the meta jokes. I don't use them to find stories, and I don't check them when I open something new. I am probably in the minority there.

Here are two that stand out to me.

1) “I wish you had given her a bit of a scare with some unprotected raw sex. Preg risk sex is the only real sex there is.
All else is mere mutual masturbation.”

Uh……no? That’s not true at all. Also, the story was about a Halloween threesome among people in their late 30s/40s. So, while pregnancy isn’t impossible, the concept wasn’t even in the story’s orbit.

2) “Great story! You like the "sound" of your voice. TOO much!!!”

I appreciate that the reader likes the story, but I still have NO idea what the second part means.

I think it means -- great story, enjoyed reading it, and either (not knowing the story in question) it needs some trimming to be more concise or you need to tone down your writerly voice a bit. Maybe you're a bit purple in places. My guess, again not knowing the story in question, would be the first.
