Did you run registry sweep in norton clean sweep to get rid of the garbage in your registry?

Also, what windows version do you have?

Miles.. do you have MSN AIM or ICQ?

I seemed to have fixed it.. to a point. I think it would be easier to talk on a messenger.. if you don't want to be bothered no problem.. i understand

I think my problem was i had something turned off in my msconfig that wasn't supposed to be

I had it on Selective Startup and had all the crap programs turned off that i didn't want to run at start up.

Just for the hell of it (i was at my wits end actually) I turned on Normal start up and rebooted. It did just fine.. on both the restart and the shut down

Now.. my question is. How can I find out what needs to be on the start up and what doesn't? I don't want EVERYTHING to run in the background. It uses way to many resources.

feel like i'm talking to myself here.. :D

anyway.. forget last post.. i followed that link that tabby gave me.. it seems to have the info i need.

hey freakygyrl32

this might help at least as per what you must have .

by the way if you do reload windows do a clean systems reboot.
any thing less is a waste of time. i know.

I have to reformat my hard drive. It seems to be getting worse the longer I ignore the problems.

I have a few questions... I'm saving things like pictures and downloads that i want to keep on to cd.

How do I save my address book for my emails? And my saved emails? My messenger lists? I did find where the program files for Msn, ICQ and AIM are. Do I just save those files and when i reinstall them later, the names of my contacts will be there?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to do this later this evening and have it go as smoothly as possible.

If you do end up having to reformat your hard drive, I am not sure about MSN and AIM but with ICQ you should probably get a new download but I would avoid the new version it seems to be full of bugs at the moment, try and find somewhere to get 99b or 2000b. You also need to make a copy of the database file - this holds your contact list its called either db or 2000b depending on what your current version is. Once you have your new download you replace the database file with your saved copy then run the database coverter.exe and you will also have to re-register your number.

Glad to hear your system is up and running. I had the same problems a week ago, only I did have to reformat and lost all my e-mail addresses and saved e-mails. The bitch of it was I had a brand new CD-RW drive sitting on my desk waiting to be installed. If I had done that first and backed up the system before I installed Norton SystemWorks I would have been OK.

Too bad this thread didn't start a week sooner. I never would have installed SystemWorks if I knew it was so problematic. My thanks to everyone who contributed here, you have helped at least two people.

Or is that one person and a "real dog." ;)
