do you tighten the laces on your own?? I have recently gotten shopping happy and have some pretty new things to try on. I don't have anyone to help me tighten the laces and I am sure there is a way ?? Maybe ... lol

Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

Depends. Do they lace behind and also have an enclosure in the front? If so, put it on with the lace in front, the enclosure (zipper or hooks) in the back, tighten it, then take it off from the back and then put it back on normally.

Alternatively, you can tighten it (but not too tight) in the front and then shimmy the corset around so the laces are in the back. You may have to re-adjust the knot (a simple reef knot is the best because you can loosen it to re-tighten it), but it can work in a pinch. This is particularly good if you are wearing your corset as outerwear. It gives you support but isn't so stiff that you can barely move.

ETA: this twist around method is the one you should use if you do not have laces but rather hooks or a zipper.

Another way, the one that I use, is actually tighten the garment behind my back, and use a clothes pin as an anchor (that first tie-up). It's the best out of three (assuming that corset as another enclosure). Will it be as tight as if someone else tied it for me? No. Does it give me the shape and look I am looking for? Absolutely.

The corset must be properly laced before you tighten it ... and both sets of laces should meet in the middle, in the back. It doesn't matter much if you have hooks or a zipper on the front or the side; these are you to REMOVE the corset quickly. The corset MUST BE tightened EVERY SINGLE TIME you wear it.

To put it on, the laces must be VERY loose. Wrap the corset around you, hook/zipper it up, and get it into position (the MIDDLE of the corset, where the top and bottom laces meet, should be comfortably in the middle of your back. Lean forward and arrange your tits so they are at the top of the corset. Stand up, and using both hands grab both sets of laces and pull straight back, away from your body. The laces will pull the corset in. Keep PULLING and PULLING and PULLING until the corset is ... REALLY REALLY TIGHT. Grab both sets of laces with one hand and rearrange your tits with the other, plump 'em up high! Pull the laces AGAIN! and you should be ready to tie the corset closed. With a teensy bit of practice, you'll get the knack to do it quickly.

Unhook/zip the corset to remove it. To store the corset, keep it unhooked/zipped and the laces very loose, ready for next time. When investing in a corset, look for grommetted lace holes, sturdy cotton strings, and LINING. Don't wear it on bare skin, remember that leather stinks after awhile since it can't be washed, and your corset should never be washed either. Spot clean only. Take care of it and it will take care of you :D

Thank you :) this is a great "How To" I will practise and hopefully get the hang of it quickly. Really great instructions. This corset has the grommetted lace holes, steel boning and is a heavy silk, it is lined as well. Thanks again ...

reef knot???

WTF??? I don't even know what that is, let alone how to tie one! Apparently, if I get a corset, I'm gonna have to find myself an Eagle Scout to help me out! LOL :)

If you're new to corseting or using new corset, I recommend tightening gradually. Get it snug, do other stuff for about ten to twenty minutes and then tighten it a bit more. This lets the corset ease into the shape you're after instead of all at once. If you're used to corseting, its not as big of a deal.

When you go to take the corset off, do the same thing in reverse. Loosen it bit, hold for a moment or two, then loosen it a bit more. Have a chair or bed nearby if you get dizzy or light-headed.

Corsets are essentially compression device that can alter your blood flow. If you've been in a tight-laced corset for more then a few minutes, take your time easing out of it. I've seen grown women nearly faint from having their corsets released too quickly. Admittedly, I do historical reenactment, so there's possibly fatigue and hydration issues there too, but better to use a little caution then end up with concussion.

Enjoy your new corset(s).

I must pop in and add, it depends on the corset you have. A good tight lacing, steel boned corset should run you a few hundred. These have very strong laces (I believe they use cord made for parachutes) the laces will be long enough to pull around front for your final pull.
Also do not put the tie in the middle of your back! Find your true waist, below your ribs, almost flush with your belly button. I find most of my good corsets, the tie point is only 5-7 eyes from the bottom.
There are a lot of cheap (made in China plastic boned) ones out there, don't tighten these too much. They will rip, but they're cute for nights out.

I just remembered I'm wearing one of my steel corsets in my profile pic. Although I'm wearing belts, you can see how low the tie point is. That is one of the keys to comfort and breathing when tightly laced.

Thanks Vixandra and Loverskitten for the additional valuable info :) I tried this morning with a modicum of success :)
