The country music filled the small honky tonk in the town of Devil's Flatt, Louisiana. Jenn carried a tray of beers to a table of oil rig workers in the back. As usual she went pretty much unnoticed by almost everyone. The job in her uncle's bar was a god send for her since her stepmother kicked her out of the house her father had built. She had been all sweetness and light until the day he passed away from cancer, leaving her to sell off his estate a little bit at a time. It was well known that the woman had manipulated her father into writing Jenn out of the will.

Her Uncle Perry had been the one and only person to believe her when she talked about what her stepmother was up to. He gave her this job and a place to stay until she saved up enough for an apartment. Quiet and demure, Jenn never really got much attention and that was how she liked it. When she didn't get noticed it was to be treated as a child. Jenn was 25 years old and she looked just barely 18 years old. People always acted like she was too young to understand anything.

It was a good thing she never lost her temper. Jenn liked having control of her emotions. Losing that grip on them once at her dad's funeral made her feel like she was falling down without any place to land. She would avoid that feeling again at all costs. It was why she confounded most people when it came to Gavin King, the resident cowboy casanova. He spent most of his time in the bar surrounded by women but she hardly saw why. There was nothing that extraordinary about him in her eyes.

He was handsome but to Jenn that meant very little. She prefered men with more depth to him. Whenever he came into the car she avoided him, switching tables with girls so she didn't have to take his orders, pretending she didn't hear him when he tried to start a conversation or make a comment or just plain act like he wasn't there. It had gotten to a point nowadays that people were starting to laugh at the fact that she wouldn't pay him two seconds of attention.

Her Uncle Perry had asked her to close up for him and she was just finishing up the clean up. There was a cleaning service that took care of the bar but Jenn didn't like leaving it too much of a mess. A favorite song of hers started playing on the speakers and she couldn't help singing along. No one ever heard her sing but Jenn had a voice on her, one that she kept to herself.

She didn't notice the lone figure watching her from a dark corner near the door. Someone was seeing her in a new way and making a plan on how to deal with it. Jenn was partly through the second verse when she felt a big hand on her waist. "Eek!" She jumped back and away from the body that had come up behind her. "What the hell are you doing here?! We're close."
