The other scenario I always liked was about an upper class family where the Dad was no longer around for whatever reason. This also means that the Dads income was gone. After some time the fancy schools, cars, clothes, neighborhood are all in jeopardy. The mom who is now dating a somewhat sketchy guy, through him, learns that he knows a guy who will pay nice money for homemade videos of things like real siblings having sex. I love this idea. It works because I think you can imply that not only is the loss of the father’s income a significant factor, but so is the loss of the father’s moral character. You could suggest that the father held the family together with moral guidance. When that influence is gone, deviant behaviors not seriously considered by the remaining family members would seem fine now.

I think sometimes to make a story more plausible, going back in time can help. Because people did not live in that written era, it muddies the water on what possibly could have happened.
Maybe this is a case in point, and maybe not, but in the modern era, it would be almost inconceivable that a brother and sister would be caught in a blizzard where they would have to spend a lot of time alone. But it becomes a lot more plausible when there is a blizzard on the high plains, the horses are holed up in their hovel, and the brother and sister are battling the elements to get the horses fed and watered. They begin to talk about hearing their parents "having another sibling in 9 months" since they heard them the night before in a prairie shack with uninsulated, thin walls, then talk about their own sex lives. "I was having sex with Laura until her family pulled up stakes and left to go west". The sister admits she had sex with another neighbor and how good it was. Soon they realize they are going to be snowed in for the winter, are miles away from neighbors, alone now, and could explore one another since they both are turned on...
It would take more than a paragraph to make that story line smoothly-believable, but you see my point; the isolation that existed 150 years ago is going to be easier to digest. As Ray Bradbury explained, "if you make everything else true to what a fan knows is true, they will digest one fantastical part". I did that with the above. Everything is historically accurate, the rather unbelievable part; a brother and sister having sex, becomes more plausible because the rest is based on historical knowns.
