There's a simple solution to crime and in my view, one that we should try. All the feel good stuff around crime has proved useless, so perhaps it's time to try a simpler alternative and see if it has an effect. (Given the bulk of crime is recidivist and committed by the same people over and over again, one surmises this approach may well be effective.

Quite simply, what we should try is to execute every common law felon (murder, robbery - doesn't matter what, mayhem (which is malicious wounding), rape, larceny, arson, and manslaughter) on the first conviction and wipe out crime by wiping out criminals. Heck, add in illegal immigration and we won't even have to deport them.

Simple. Effective. Comprehensive. Let's see what effect that has on crime rates.

If you want to see how well that works look at states that have and don't have the death penalty. States without the death penalty have lower homicide rates than those that do. Over the last 20 years states with the death penalty have homicide rates between 50% to 100% higher than those that don't. Capital punishment brutalizes societies.

Back in the real world: crime rates dropped again in 2024, particularly violent crime. Crime is down to 1960s levels but the MAGA sheep pretend it’s out of control.

Figures released by the FBI on Tuesday, however, confirm that the nation was as safe as it ever had been during the final full year of the Biden administration. Every category of crime decreased in frequency, and violent crime in particular dropped to levels not seen since the 1960s, per the report.

The bureau’s annual Reported Crimes in the Nation Statistics report reflects a 4.5% year-on-year decrease in all violent crime nationally in 2024, with murder and non-negligent manslaughter falling 14.5% from the 2023 figure.

The FBI report shows that murders in cities with more than 1 million residents declined by 19.1%, the highest percentage of any category of crime.

The figures belie Trump’s oft-repeated fear-mongering during the election campaign that “soft-on-crime” Democrats had fueled surging crime rates, particularly in major cities under their control.

MAGA sheep believe everything Donnie tells them, so they’ll say this report from Kash Patel’s FBI is fake. Such dumb sheep!

I think that the statistics engage in a bit of confirmation bias and the argument is akin to which came first, the chicken or the egg.

For instance; those states which don't have a large homicide rate, don't need the death penalty. Those with higher rates need something to deter the bad element. Trying to compare/contrast the 2 situations is disingenuous because it's not the same except superficially.
