Mine was a fear of being abandoned. I used to get myself all worked up thinking I was going to wake up and my whole family would be gone.

My parents divorced when I was pretty young... think maybe that left an impression on my little kid brain.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who opened up. Things we are afraid of are tough to talk about sometimes.

spiders.....they still scare me silly

While for me spiders hasn't been a fear but rather I have tried to avoid direct contact, I recall that on my 40th birthday I spotted a large spider in a kitchen cupboard [very old house - not unusual]. I did the usual thing of going to get a bowl to put over it and a card to slide under it, to take it to the Great Outdoors, and then I thought to myself, "Si, it's a spider! You're 40! just PICK IT UP, TWIT!

So I did. What a pleasant sensation, this thing tickling my palms as I found it a safe new home ... :)

I chose other, like many of you. My biggest fear was the fear of letting my dad down. Took me years to realize that fear was in my head and his love was unconditional. I think it took becoming a dad to have that fear removed. Fear is a useful tool though. Keeps us sharp and ready to face challenges. Anyone without fear is either a liar or too stupid to know better. Courage is looking fear in the eye and moving on.

I have always loved this mantra from the book Dune:

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.
Damn fine post, eh people? Pleased to meet you on the boards, Mebtaz. Allow me to sit at your feet some and just breathe it in.
