This is a closed thread your invited to read along and hopefully enjoy.
Today in a world full of computers, instant communications and the pursuit of material goods it is hard to believe that less than 80 years ago things were quite different. It was a time when people believed in a higher calling of giving to others of self sacrifice.. It was a time when young dedicated people volunteered for the foreign Missions. It was also a time when these young selfless volunteers looked on the people of the mission lands as their little brown, black or yellow brothers and sisters that they had come to save from their ignorance and heathen ways. They saw no value in cultures older than their owns and did not abide beliefs other than their own.
The little Tramp steamer had sailed from Portland Oregon its destination Shanghai China. That was a month and half ago. If they had sailed directly to China the voyage would have only taken two weeks But the Universal Mission society could not afford to pay for a direct passage. The Cathy Fai had wound its way south and west through the Pacific and then into the Indian Ocean and the Island of Ceylon for a cargo of tea. Now the little steamer was headed for the Melaka Straights in the Dutch East Indies. Captain Van Router had ordered the Rev. Vogel to keep his little flock of Missionaries below decks and to shown no lights on deck and to secure and shutter the portholes that gave the only relief to the stifling heat and humidity below decks. Van Router had muttered something about pirates. Pirates indeed huffed the Rev. Vogel really this was the 20th century not the 17th. That was what was running through his mind as he opened the porthole to catch a breath of air.
Dar Java saw the faint glimmer of light against the night sky. He saw the silhouette of the darken ship against the coast of Sumatra. A prize, a prize worth taking. Swiftly silently they put to sea Stalking their pry through the night preparing to strike just at first light to catch the crew tiered from the mid watch while the ship still slept.
The Passengers and crew of the Cathy Fai awoke to gunfire and shouts of panic. It did not take long the ship taken all because of a breath of fresh air on a hot , humid tropical night. Orders were passed to the passengers and crew to assemble in the main salon. It was there that they saw their captors Celebes Pirates. Dark powerful men dressed in loose open shirts and pantaloons of bright silk. There legs were bare and their bodies decorated with tattoos of mystical symbols and dragons.
