Jean
By the prickling of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes
I knew the phrase well, had heard it referred to in many different ways and occasions, but with Natalia the words dripped with venom.
Are you familiar with the quote Jean? Its one I should remember, especially where my male companions are concerned. You’ve been busy since we last met. Don’t you think its time you told me the real reason you’re in Boston? And more importantly, how much danger you’ve placed me in with your actions.
It was no surprise she knew of my actions, yet it stunned me how quickly she condemned me with her words and the fire in her eyes...
"If you believe that I have wronged you or abused my position as your guest, then you have the right to expurge me from your city, Natalia"
Facts we were both confident she knew and yet there lay between us more than just my actions.
"I gave you my word that no harm would come to you and yet I hear doubt in your every action, every word spoken by you? Still it is your domain and you have every right to suspect all that pass thru, for it is they that need to prove themselves to you."
There was no mockery in my voice, no malice, for I understood too well the workings of a City, and how those rules controlled the actions of it's Mistress or Master.
And how those rules were designed for order...could be used against those that followed them.
"The elders are gone, Natalia" I spoke bluntly "All now forever unreachable from our grasp, a new order has sprung up to take thier place, destroying all that was reverent to them...to US...and all that they once stood for"
I could see disbelief in her eyes and felt her anger lash out at me...and rather than resist it I opened myself to her so that she could look deep into my mind.
And see as I had the final death of each of those who sat at the Elders table, how the horde sprang upon them and dragged them down one by one.
"It was as custom demanded, a NEW clan came to them and asked for an audience, and the doors opened. So confident were the elders...so set in the base of power created centuries ago, that they smiled as if looking upon children and wouldn't allow a single guardian to watch over them."
And one by one they were dragged down, the horde swarming over them and fighting like wild animals, shouting and howling as each died in thier hands and they waved the hearts of the fallen over their heads like prizes.
"They misjudged what they didn't know. Became careless despite the warnings voiced by the younger faction that followed. And we all paid the ultimate price."
It wasn't enough. Natalia wouldn't...couldn't allow my words to be her truth, the thought of accepting it and the reality they meant was simply unacceptable.
"Use your powers, Natalia, I came here because I knew of your unique talents, your abilities to link with our kind as if the distance didn't exist. You are familiar with several who sat at the Table, your past Master sat at the right hand of the oldest and most powerful. If I lie to you now you may have my heart in your hands and consume it."
I stood waiting. Waiting to see if the Mistress of the City would accept the truth and allow it to influence her actions, and waited to see if she were ready to accept the rest of our unwanted reality.
