Being a guy I am far from an expert on this, but I do know that my wife and I tried quite a few toys before finding the right one for her. You shouldnt get discouraged on your first try and you may need to experiment, so dont throw it in the trash yet.
Experimenting is going to be key.

I personally don't like the penis-shaped vibrators much for internal use because they don't apply the vibrations in a good place; it tends to be impossible to get them to hit the g-spot. But try using it with the head of the penis on your clit, and try thrusting it in and out, as well as twisting it back and forth, with the vibrations turned off, see if you like any of those.
