The forces of P.C. aren't just after the symbols of the Confederacy. Now they're out to destroy the Founding Fathers--including George Washington, Ben Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson--because they owned slaves.
Activists like Carl Galmon are pushing to change the names of government schools in New Orleans. See, 90 percent of government school students there are black...and black activists think they shouldn't have to attend schools named for slave owners. Since Galmon began his holy war against American heroes in 1991, he's succeeded in changing the names of 26 New Orleans government schools. So much for George Washington Elementary School. It's now named after Dr. Charles Richard Drew. Drew is a black surgeon who pioneered techniques for preserving blood plasma.
But there's still much work to be done. There are still 51 city schools named after slave owners. A lot of these schools were named after John McDonogh, a New Orleans philanthropist and slave owner The city seems to be running out of new names, so these schools are just being numbered. At least it’s a way to teach numbers.
Let's think about this for a moment. What does changing the school's name do? Does it automatically improve students' test scores? Does it destroy the anti-achievement mentality that keeps many of them from achieving their best? Does changing the school's name improve their chances of getting into a good college after they graduate from high school? Does it spur the teachers and administrators to rise above mediocrity?
Of course not. It's nothing but liberally correct, P.C. nonsense designed to raise students' self-esteem. It's just a name. It's like removing Confederate symbols from state flags. It protects the obsessive-compulsive hypersensitive among us without raising any real issues. What’s worse, it recasts our Founding Fathers as villains and dismisses their achievements--simply because they owned slaves.
A natural extension of smearing the Founding Fathers is to conclude that, since they owned slaves, their ideas on freedom and individual liberty are moot ... therefore, today's leaders can be totally justified in tearing down the system of government Jefferson, Madison, Washington, Franklin and others built. All of which plays right into the hands of the big-government socialists who want to take over.
