The problem with a dictator who wants to do what you want him to do, is that he can change his mind. He may be replaced with a dictator who wants to do what you do not want him to do. In either case it will be dangerous to criticize him.
That is why people are better off under a democracy that allows open political debate.

Midterm victories could boost him for a little while, but he is deep into his twilight years. Now is too late for him to start a dictatorship. After a populist president, the standard next stage is a more conventional politician achieving much less, if anything at all.
