1) Instead of gradually establishing character over two chapters I would frontload it so that the protagonists would be more fully realized at an earlier stage
At least to me, character development and plot development are the keys to successful writing. A lot can and will be forgiven if you mesmerize the readers with a solid plot and give them character that your audience can relate to.
