Do You Use Other Writer's Stuff?

What with only seven to 19 plots to work from there's gonna be a lot of overlap even if you don't consciously borrow.

Totally agree with you here.

There is an art and craft to the fetish as much as to writing. Some writers here suck technically, but they are master "eroticians" if there is such a word. Amazing sexual beings.

I
There's a writer of D/d on this site--see if you can find him mwahaha--who basically mapped the fetish as far as Im concerned. Hes like Columbus. 100% solid gold. Hot is not even the word. His writing? Eh. Barely just enough to get the fetish on the page.

I wouldnt say I "use" his stuff but every once in a while I go scrape of some of that pure molten gold and form a story with it.

To the topic, I can honestly say no. I am sure my stories share traits with other stories simply because its so hard to come up with a premise, scenario, spin, that hasn't been done before, but I have never set out to emulate a story or part of one.

As for type of story, Alwayswantedtoo was my inspiration to try writing mother/son stories. I had no interest in them, thinking 'jeez what the hell would make a mother sleep with her kid?(sibling incest I always saw as more possible, same age, some 'place' in life, parents should no better was my take)

But his stories....he really made the implausible seem plausible and worked hard at it. His stories were slow burns that justified the taboo and featured love as well as lust and by the time they got to the end...damn.

So when I write them I keep that in mind. I have never done his ideas(that I know of) but I try to capture the 'feel' of his work.

But on the other hand what I watch influences me.

Mark and Megan from SWB have a lot of Natural born Killers in them, they are a less psychotic version of Mickey and Mallory and just happen to be related. They are irreparably broken, are only okay when together and are bat shit crazy.

Every Dog has its day was heavily influenced by True Detective. Woody played such a misogynistic d-bag that I wanted him to die in the show(a testament to how good of a part he played) and "Josh" was based on him, a cop who was a total dick.

A book I have for sale "Dark Genesis" features a female character who is a mix of the woman from I spit on your grave and Lisbeth from Girl with a dragon tattoo.

So I have used others concepts in my work, but not other authors from here.

I just ordered 2 John O'Hara novels, to change my direction. I've almost exhausted the noir books, and O'Hara was sort of a noir fellow traveler. I already own 5-6 of his novels. Most are about rich men and whores.

I can't write that stuff. I get turned around.

But ... that's what it's all about!

There is no copyright on plot. It's perfectly ok to take something that inspires you and breath new life into it. Make it your own. Give it a new spin.

Absolutely.

But . . . .

Can you do it and still be fresh? Can you do it and command the reader's attention without them thinking, "aw, hell, I've seen this before."

That's the real challenge. ;)

Ofttimes you remind me of PILOTs son. PILOT would love to thump folks for plagiarizing the alphabet. There oughta be a law!

I say, theres nuthin new under the Sun, and much of creation is built of old stuff.

I bet re-cycling ruins your day.

I have a series for sale about a secret BDSM group comprised of well off powerful doms.

Not all that original, its been done.

But before I started writing I made a "handbook" for the group. How many members (12 and always 6 men 6 women) the age limit either way (30 to join 50 you "retire" so the group continues to evolve)

Then I got into the rules of the group, punishments, transgressions...the fact they are never supposed to have sex with each other unless the groups master/mistress "grants time"

I went on and on with the rules, history, the goals of the group what they do at the meetings.

I got it to a point where I can honestly say, yes there are books out there about groups like this, but not a group like this....of you know what I mean.

I think a story can be like a Rorschach test. Show 10 authors the same story and it appears differently to all of them.

JBJ: "My experience with women is, if they want you they come after you, and they have their tricks to capture you. They find reasons to sit near you, they borrow change from you, they pick you for their team, they invite you to come see their new office or apartment, they recruit you to move furniture for them. And they ease you from a public space to a private place. Some are bolder...I did marriage therapy with a couple. The wife wore no panties, sat beside her husband and let me see Paradise the whole time...hubby had no clue. I was in my bosses office one day when she stands, lifts her skirt to her waist, and adjusts her panties.

Serial killers aren't usually the dolts who get caught, theyre organized and skilled at human hunting."

Yep. 100% spot on.

And, lovecraft68:

"...and not fapping to the amazing genius and sublime prose of the superior authors here."

lol totally lmaool.

And this - "the heartless sex, dark for the sake of dark screams disingenuous poser."

Yup, agree there too. That is, when it comes across as contrived in order just to fit into a supposedly 'dark' theme, but which is really only 'pop dark.'

For my next story, I was considering putting a new disclaimer: "This is a work of erotic fiction, with the emphasis more on 'erotic' than 'fiction.' It is intended to be arousing. So if all you're looking for is a 'well-written story' (or if that's all you find arousing), you may want to pass this one up."

I actually tried to see if there is a technical sexual fetish for good writing, like biblio-philia or something. Didn't find it. Doesn't mean lit couldn't make a category for it.

Yeah, I know, I mean like, yah know, these crazy people thinking they're writing stories on a sex site.

Oh, wait, we do write stories on a sex site. Its just some don't want to admit that, it ruins their fantasy of being "real writers"

I agree that stories that are mindless "hey, let's fuck" sex don't do it for me and many others, but they do appeal to a lot of the masses here.

Imagine those idiots, getting off on the sex in a story on literotica and not fapping to the amazing genius and sublime prose of the superior authors here.

Personally I prefer a good solid story, but with some good heat to go with it. I joke to people that "My smut has depth dammit!" I work hard on telling a story and trying to get people into the characters and I believe story and tension and conflict can make the sex even hotter.

But that is because I want the sex to be hot, I am aware of the site I write on and what people ultimately want here. I want it too...guess I'm just a pervert, a bottom feeding wannabe...I'll never be a real writer.

Good story+ good sex? Win win for all, author and reader.

But the authors who go so far out of their way to show their 'writing skills' to the point you get 90% story and 10% 'smut' and the smut is obviously there only to meet the requirement of this being an erotic site and the sex is mechanical and lifeless... well, that's an insult.

people who just want to write 'real stories' ,should drop them into non erotic or novels and novellas, but wait.... no one reads those and the egos must be stroked.

Real stories with token lifeless tab A slot B sex come off as contrived , pretentious and self masturbation, appealing only to similar writers who fap over "see what I did there, see what I accomplished"

This is an erotic site, people ultimately want sex, not Hemingway, unless of course its Hemingway having hot sex.

The only thing worse than heat less mechanical sex here just to 'qualify' is the 'look how dark and twisted I can pretend to be, aren't I cool?" crowd.

because just like the heartless sex, dark for the sake of dark screams disingenuous poser.

And some people can smell that a mile away.

I write sex stories on a sex site

I'm happy to admit that, then again I don't have the self esteem issues others have. My ego need not be stroked by readers or authors, if I wrote it the way I wanted to, for me, and no one else, its enough for me.

Pornoscribeaphobia

The fear of people thinking you write erotica

Last night I fell over another movie theater hot-wife story. They meet at the movie (up in nigger heaven) and later move the action to his car in the parking lot. The theme now resembles a litter of kittens. Did I mention how PILOT opposes breeding as genetic plagiarism?

Actually, I put all my garbage out on Wednesday, recyclables and all. My daughter likes to remind me of what goes where.

Yeah . . . nothing new under the sun and all that. Old news, Jimbo.

The point I was making, and which seems to have sailed past those white whiskers on your upper lip, is that the point to good writing is to present what has already been done in an interesting way that captures the reader's attention. Even if it's the same old plot, bring something new to the table. Make Prince Charming a homosexual. Turn the victim into the predator. Make the precinct captain someone who isn't either pathologically numb or a brain-deficient politico. Do something to offer a spark of new life to the tried-and-true mix.

But JBJ probably hasn't found that any of his favorite author books that do his thinking for him. You're going to make his head explode and prompt him to post an indecipherable and irrelevant one liner. Maybe he'll throw in the word "nigger" for kicks.

Ulp, I think I see one coming now.

Sure. The killer in my latest effort attacks his victims with simple, common, untraceable chemical compounds that quickly overwhelm, incapacitate, and kill. No guns or knives involved.

Its following effort is about fascist homosexuals conquering America's governments, agencies, and institutions. I call it THE ONE-PERCENTERS. They use Africans and ugly women to enforce their programs.

I have used everything I learned about from reading good and poor writing. Since I generally write smut about improbable situations that doesn't involve much violence, I cater to the imaginative reader, who likes sex in excess. Although I do have a plot of shooting a couple of Mexicans who pull guns in a bar, as part of a romantic comedy.

So yeah I rip off Azimov and Pratchit and JK Rowling. "Only steal what sells," my god father told me.

"Pop Dark" good term.

I will write a dark piece, but only if I'm really feeling it and I think I can handle the crap that comes with it. When it comes to those things I'm a method writer I live my characters misery.

I don't think its pop dark when your wife tells you, "Finish this damn thing or I'm making you talk to someone."

The thing about using old and worn out ideas is, the younger members in your audience won't have ever seen all the older stuff that you have borrowed from. Works of fiction that were originally groundbreaking in their genre often seem like nothing special to people whose only exposure to the genre is the works that copied from the groundbreaker.

I was curious about the video for Five-Finger Death Punch's remake of "Bad Company," as a former buddy of mine is supposedly in it (the video was filmed in Iraq; my buddy was deployed there from 2010-2012; I didn't see him in the video). In the comments section that follows, there were several to the effect of "everyone keeps telling me this is a remake. Who recorded the original?"

I remember the same sort of confusion about Marilyn Manson's remake of "Sweet Dreams" and even Sebastian Bach's rendition of "Sweet Caroline."

If it's older than ten years, there's a sizable percentage of the public that will only remember a remake.

Almost makes me want to crack open some of my short story compilations of Robert E. Howard and see what I can make of them.

What's this thread about again? I'm so caught up in some of the droll stuff:

"method writer, live my characters' misery.' Ah hahahahaha. Ya got me there.

"finish the damn thing or I'm making you talk to someone." Hehehehe.

And PervOtaku - you are totally right. There's a massive amount of stuff that people think is original - Hollywood, for quite a while now has been doing this thing where 'someone' 'finds a lost novel or manuscript from some obscure Swiss/Austrian/Latvian-whatever writer' or even actually creates a whole persona involving an actual living 'writer' claiming to have written the 'new' thing...

It never is new, though.

Shamefully for me, I like some of the movies but I know their origin is different to the 'fairytale' being told by the producers.

Who cares nowadays. Everyone's heard of 9 and 1/2 weeks. No one's heard of Maurice Dekobra. Besides Mickey Rourke is that ugly chap with scars and a broken nose who's typecast as the bad guy...
