Does anyone have a solution to killer migraines?

I have also thought it might be allergies...but that is another subject all together.

Thanks.

That does sound a lot like the headaches I get. Two Sudafed and one Excedrin extra strength (exact same formula as Excedrin Migraine BTW) usually do the trick for me. If the headache is already established, it takes two excedrin.

Allergies/sensitivities to pollen and dust is probably not another subject. If you are sensitive to dust and pollen, it can cause sinus headaches that mimic migraines and stress headaches.

The accupressure point between the thumb and forefinger generates immediate relief off stress headaches for as long as you keep the pressure applied. I've found it a good check for the difference between stress and other headaches.

I recently moved to a desert area in the mountains at a high altitude from the beach area...it seems that my headaches are worse now...

Sounds like a humidifier might help, although altitude sickness is a possibility as well.

Many headaches are the result of dehydration, and moving from the humidity of a beach to the desert can cause you to dehydrate without realizing it, especially when it's warmer than where you moved from. The low humidity causes you to not realize that you are sweating the same as you would in a more humid climate because the sweat evaporates faster.

When I first moved to the desert, I had a constant low grade headache for nearly a year. It wasn't until it went away that I even realized why I had been so grumpy for a year. It went away after a checkup caused the doctor to prescribe more fluids for chronic dehydration.

Caffiene withdrawal is another possibility. It causes migraine type headaches as the primary symptom.

As you might have guessed by now, I suffer regularly from several different types of headaches. <G>

Harold.....I feel your pain ( to quote an ex pres)

:p

My grandmother swears by this, but I have yet to try it(since I have this amazing allergy to anything but tylenol)

Try rubbing something like aspercream at the spot of the pain. Its supposed to be absorbed into your skin and help stop the pain immediately.

Feverfew tea can be had at any health food store-GNC probably not, but Fresh Fields, or Whole Foods-maybe even Trader Joe's...and yes it does taste nasty-I mix mine with rapsberry zinger-a great female tea and lots of honey. If I catch the headache, yes the tea helps. Also try having wolfie massage your eyebrows very gently from the inner towards the outer-I have a big, fat 22# cat that always licks my eyebrows when I get a migraine-sounds weird but the slow gentle pressure helps. Eother that or I just want him to stop and that distracts me-it's pretty gross especially if he has cat food breath-bleggh!

i just wanted to clarify----excedrin doesn't contain sudafed or any other decongestant. it was the equivalant to one regular strength asprin, one regular strength tylenol (acetametaphin) and the special ingrediant of caffeine. if i remember right, caffeine constricts the blood vessels, therefore slowing the flow of blood to the site of pain.

Yes, make sure that you headache is a migraine and not a sinus or stress headache. Migraine usually occur on only one side of the head. Also people are sensitive to light and sound, and movement (ie getting out of bed). Throwing up is not uncommon. Also, auras (visual disturbances) may occur for some before the headache occurs.

Other headaches may mimic migraines.
I think though that if you ask any migraine sufferer, they'll tell you that no headache in the world is worse than a migraine. At least with a sinus headache you can get out of bed without throwing up (you just can't lean over since it feels like your brain is sliding into your skull).

Here's a thing for women to check on---birth control. The hormones in them may be the trigger for your migraine. I took Ortho-cept for about 2 years before I finally figured out that it was the culprit. Now I take a low-dose pill. I hardly have migraines and now if I do have them, they're during my period instead of anytime throughout the cycle.

Symptoms vs Causes...

Siren...I don't really know anything about you, but have you given really careful thought to what might be sources of stress? Are you happy overall? Are there things that you are really unhappy about? Do you exercise regularly (I'll explain in a minute)?

Stress is like high blood pressure. Sometimes it's silent and sneaky and you don't know it's there. CD-able is a chartered counselling and health psychologist who often gets GP referrals for chronic headaches that seem unbeatable. She's a last resort and often has found that there were things going on in the patient's life that caused stress. The stress caused unoticed muscular spasms in the neck and resulted in excruciating headaches (I don't think these are the same as migraines, but I don't know much about that sort of thing).

The thing with exercise is that it's a great stress buster. It gets your mind off of things, releases endorphins, and reduces blood pressure in the long run.

Just something else to consider.

Me? Naw, never get headaches. CD-able says it's my lifestyle. I sit in a leather chair, in my shorts, and write on a computer all day. Don't have to go to the gym because we have one in the loft so I don't even have to fight traffic to exercise!

Good luck sorting it out...it's gotta be a real pain...literally.

Sirens' Mograines

Gotta go with Earthgodess on the feverfew. My wife had migraines, about 6-8 a year. Started drinking feverfew tea and took 2-500 mgs. of feverfew capsules daily. Took care of the headaches. After about 6 months, drop it down to just 1-500 mgs. daily.

Now a couple things you should know, Feverfew tastes like dirt. The tea is very nasty tasting and the capsules, can develop gas. This is a side effect that only lasts a couple months. But every time you belch, you end up with a dirt taste in your mouth. Be aware that your skin may become sensitive to the sunlight and can burn very easily.

The leaves, best take the leaves and chew it with buttered bread. If the silva of the chewed leaves get on your lips, you may feel a burning sensation and can cause blisters.

Another thing is massage. Helps alot if the feeling of the migraine is just starting and can help knock it out.

Hope this helps.
