Does the stock market really matter?

I mean, does it matter to anybody who does not have money in stocks? When the Dow rises or falls, does that really indicate anything about the general health of the economy?

Recession usually follows a market downturn. Meaning unemployment. So yes the market does say something about the general health of the economy.
