Men and especially women, for whom the height of passion was missionary on a Friday night after the news at ten, felt able to talk about it freely in bars and pubs and restaurants and living-rooms and parks… Some (like my SO) shut it down, others got a taste for it and expanded their horizons.

I never read the books so I can't say anything. The books did seem to strike a cord with some women though. I wonder if there are a lot latent subs out there?
