It occurred to me that most people aren't super-specific about their desires, so some relatively minor changes might work ( a little taller, a little shorter, a little more muscular, a little more curvy, etc.)

Also, you could make the shape-shifting new instead of something they've had a lot of time getting used to. Make it a curse, perhaps.
