IC: Natasa laughed as she lounged on her couch watching reruns of Xena: Warrior Princess. Leave it to Hollywood to be given and inch and go running off into left field faster than the French in retreat. While the show was fairly accurate and Hercules too for that matter, both included major exaggerations or like the myths themselves blatant lies. The only think even remotely accurate was the actors that had been chosen for their various parts. Natasa was one of the younger members of the Greek pantheon that actually found the show entertaining, but then as usual she was completely left out.
Who was she? Natasa was the daughter of Hades and Persephone, contrary to what the stories said the couple was not childless, but unlike the other gods because Hades dwelt in the land of the dead, they had to try harder to produce a child. Her name meant resurrection, as she had been borne dead. She was the Goddess of Premature death, and guide to those souls to the underworld for judgment. There were some things even the Fates couldn't predict and that was where she came in. Natasa was there when criminals escaped their punishment and when the innocent were robbed a full and long life. She took after her mother's side of things were her tan skin and brunette hair, her eyes though those she got from the Lord of the Underworld, depending on the soul they would burn with and ungodly fire or be as compassionate as a mother's.
The other thing the show had pretty much misinterpreted had been the Twilight. Yes the Fates and Themis had predicted the end of the Greek Pantheon rule, but not through their death and not by the hand of some Amazon's child. Simply put the 4 had seen a time when their worship would be nearly no more, their followers scattered to the wind and their temples in ruin. And when Christianity had flourished and spread like a wildfire then came the Twilight. The Gods took to a dreamless sleep, until they had a stronger power base. Only a small number had been able to resist the pull of the long slumber by the fact their godhoods were bound too tightly to humanity and the universe. Ares and the others had watched man though its adolescence until the others awoke to a new world and new worshipers.
Natasa's job though hard was easy in that she had no real connection to the souls she led over. It wasn't for her to judge their fate or look at the scope of their lives; the brief and the very brief. Most of the souls she led over were those of children; all of whom went to the Elysian fields. Everyone else though went through the normal process. Only a few cultures continued the right of placing coins on the yes or in the mouth and old Charon had grown used to have to do his job for 'free' A black shaggy head fell into her lap with a whine and she glanced down at her dog Than. Than was a one of Cerberus' many pups, but had too nice a personality for the work his sire and siblings held. So than, named after the Grim Reaper, Thanathos, was her companion and protector. For the pure souls he was a comfort and for the wicked, well he was a good motivator for compliance.
"Ok boy time for a walk," she turned the tv off while Than, whole looked more wolf than dog hopped off the couch and went to stand by the door. Getting up she stretched slowly and then grabbed her keys and his leash and soon the pair were headed out of the apartment and on their way to the park. Hades was often on Natasa for spending so much time amongst mortals. He always told her that eventually she wouldn't be able to be so impartial, that someday one of her precious mortals was going to appear on her list.
Natasa always brushed aside his words, sure of her own resolve to do her job without a second job. And yes she did have mortal friends and in the case of one a lover. Jason played sax in a bar she frequented often enough and the two had got close. Not dating close, but close enough for a semi relationship and a good tumble in the sack. It was Friday so that meant he would be in the park playing until it was time for him to head to the bar. As she and Than entered the park gate, saxophone music could be heard on the air. "Same as always," she said as they got to talk. Than was always happy to see Jason as the player often had a treat or five for the dog.
It was no shock that Jason had drown a small crowd around him while he played. Unlike some of the other players his case was always closed and he didn't have a tip cup. In his mind he made enough at the bar and what he did during the day was for the love of the music. Moving close she watched him play with a smile, it was a shame more didn't believe in the gods, at least then it would have made a relationship with him easier to forge.
