Check the edit options link in your user cp (click the button labeled user CP at the top of the page and then click edit options)
One of the options is to display IMG commands and attachments as links instead of images.
A slow connection might be causing the disply of the images to time out if that's not the problem.
It depends on whether you're seeing a red X or a link.
If your problem is a slow connection, then changing things to show the links will let you download the images by right clicking on the link and choosing "save target as" so you can view them at your leisure with your photo processing program.
(The last suggestion assumes you are using IE4 or later.)

Well well... now why won't netscape even acknowledge the presence of the files, it's not as though .bmp is some bizarre format. I wonder if IE has registered itself as the only valid viewer for that format somewhere deep in the innards of my OS.... or maybe it was the full moon?
