A podcast I listen to has adults try to save Encyclopedia Brown mysteries. There aee hundreds of stories that Dan Sobel churned out over the decades. The solutions are not always easy because Encyclopedia Brown's conjectures and extrapolations would be blown out of the water by the greenest and lowest paid public defender. Anyway I thought fun story idea would be Leroy "Encyclopedia" Brown all grown up He washed out of the police academy but set himself up as P.I. in the small town of Idaville. He often has to track down Bugs Meany to get him to cough up the child support he owes to his many baby mommas. Sally Kimball is now a fitness instructor who works part time fior Encyclopedia as an investigator and sometimes honeypot lure. On at least one of her assignments on behalf of Encyclopedia's agency she was strip searched as the hoods suspected she was wearing a wire. The romance between Sally and Encyclopedia is long over although Encyclopedia still pines for her. Sally is engaged to the Idaville Police chief She funnels Encyclopedia P.D. information. much to the consternation of the police chief, who views Brown as a bumbling amateur with an unhealthy interest in his fiancee whom he also puts in harms way. Should be a fun write. What do you think?

So, I think it’s a fun idea. I loved those books as a kid. Now, if you post here, you’d have to change them to different names as the rules are if you use a copyrighted character it will be considered from the age the series takes place in, so no growed up stories

If you write it though, I’d be interested.

As a kid, Encyclopedia Brown was one of my favorite series of books.
Would you incorporate the challenge of "case solving" as the original series did?

Yeah, I could write the story and file off the serial numbers for Lit.com and publish the "fan fiction" verson at SOME OTHER site!

If there's a childhood character who grew up to discover he was gay, I feel like it was Brown. He's like a 5 on the Kinsey scale. Sally was his first kiss but they decided they were better as friends. In fact I suspect she still has a little bit of a thing for him which is why she feeds him info and why she ended up dating cops.

I'd bet anything that Benoit Blanc is at least partially inspired by Encyclopedia Brown.
