Below the gleaming aircraft, cool blue, blinding white and deep green swaths of color slowly separate into dense tropical foliage edged by clean sand beaches surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. Inside the small commuter jet passengers readied themselves for the landing on St Barts. Smoothly, the plane angled for a small airstrip between sand and palm trees where brightly colored vehicles waited in a small parking area near a single building.
Near the midsection of the plane a woman looked out the window with eyes as deeply blue as the water. Her face had a subtle beauty and sensuality that drew attention...an air of reserve said to keep away. It was a combination that most men chose to avoid; younger women were much less trouble, if less interesting. The quality of her clothing spoke of money; she wore a simple cotton skirt and jewel toned camisole but made them seem as elegant as a designer gown. Good genes kept visible hints of age from her skin, something in which she took a passing pleasure while her 50-something friends scheduled Botox and face lifts. Blonde hair gathered into a loose knot showed no gray.
She seemed disinterested in the actions of her fellow passengers and sat quietly as the plane entered its final approach. The landing was easy and the passengers hurried off the plane to start their tropical vacations. Soon, only a single traveler remained.
“Miss Gilbert,” the attendant said softly. “We’ve landed, you can deplane now.”
“Hmm? Oh, certainly. I’m sorry to have held you up.” Claire Gilberts’ voice sounded like whiskey and smoke when she replied. She rose, hastily gathered her things then exited into the afternoon sun.
Customs was quickly navigated; she traveled light with just a carry-on and two small bags. A driver with Claries’ name on a small sign took her luggage and led the way to a waiting car. One other vehicle was in the lot; it sat silently with the hood up while its driver and passenger stared into the engine compartment. The passenger looked up as Claire approached.
“I don’t suppose you’d give a fellow traveler a lift?” He asked with a smile.

Claire is at a crossroads in life. She and her partner spent 20 years building a successful internet company that recently sold for enough money to allow Claire to comfortably retire anywhere in the world. However, now that the chance to relax and enjoy life has come she finds herself with no one to share it. Her partner, her husband, died before the sale was complete. They never had the chance to share the fruits of their labor and sacrifice. Claire isn’t sure she wants to go on without him. This trip may be the end of a life or the beginning of something new. Only time will tell.
