St Augustine's Abbey

This site was that of the first church (St Pancras) used by Queen Bertha of Kent even before St Augustine arrived to convert the English

St Augustine was buried here - before removal to Canterbury Cathedral. The Kings of Kent are still buried here.

Just beyond the site is the oldest Parish Church in England - St Martins.

Tourists to Canterbury often miss this site and St Martins.

Reasonably. The Church of England is struggling for younger members but evangelical churches are growing. The Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches have more members from European workers but are finding replacement priests in short supply.

One of my nephews used to be a high church Anglican priest but transferred to the Catholic priesthood where he is unusual as a married priest with children. He is now a University chaplain covering all versions of Christians.

That's a shame as castles go it is outstanding and every night it is lit to perfection dominating the town below.

But I have been there hundreds of times, including guiding foreign students over it, and schioolkids doing 'history'.

I can visit it by YouTube or just in my memories.

Uppark is interesting because the elderly noble owner (who had once had Emma, later Lady Hamilton, as a mistress when younger) proposed to his young dairy maid and married her. She kept him alive and well for many years. He sent her to Paris to learn how to be a lady, and left his estate to her. He was one of the few people who helped Emma after Nelson's death.
