I think that she may have just dealt with the long term care of the survivors.
It wouldn't be Vance's job to keep track of things like that. He did his job, got them out alive and he considers the incident as "messy but unavoidable" and in the distant past.
The survivors may think differently, though, because of the exceptionaly fierce fighting that went on inside the ship's passages, and even in the slave quarters when the slavers were retreating from the marines...
I won't bother with details, but imagine thousands of unarmed and unarmored people in the mix between two forces armed with hand lasers, hyper-velocity dart guns and plasma weapons who have some degree of protection from the weapons used.
Most slaves survived, but lots got turned into hamburger, sliced in half or reduced to a fine ash. Unavoidable...but its a hell of a thing to be in, wouldn't you say?
You may know OF him, but I think its unlikely you KNOW him.
Likely, Vance doesn't know your character at all, other than her file. He isn't a civilian, he isn't a M.D., and she is about 14 years younger than he is, so they probably travel in different circles.
