Streets were busy with crowds of rowdy people scattered on small sidewalks and parking lots. There were several different types of bars and clubs lined up for young college students to experience, naturally making this a hot spot for parties and noise. It wasn’t the place you’d expect Samantha to visit, especially alone. Something about getting drunk and making a fool out of herself wasn’t alluring, it never has been. So, while all of her friends were sneaking out late at night to go clubbing she stayed comfortably in bed. There were too many horror stories for her to gather up the courage to open her window and jump out. Too many of her friends had told her about old men grabbing and staring. It just wasn’t her scene, but she couldn’t help but wonder…
After high school she left for college in a different state away from all of her friends and family and swore to herself that she would try new things. It’s been a year since she moved and her list of to-do’s had a few check marks on it. She went to a college party in full swing and drank until she passed out, she slept with a classmate she wasn’t familiar with and didn’t obsess over it when he never called. There were a few others checked off that didn’t hold much importance to her. She thought of it as an experiment that would one day be complete and then she would get her end result. Her urges to try something more extreme led to her walking down the lit up streets of New York. At first she skipped a class, walked around her dormitory in shorts without panties on, accepted an offer from another classmate who asked if he could touch her boobs, and now she wanted something more. Having someone look at you is one thing, but to have a man really look at you, you know what he’s thinking and it’s so thrilling! She just wanted to be looked at by a man, not a classmate.
Her hair blew in the wind as she continued walking down a dim lighted street with almost no one outside. She could hear music coming from inside a rectangular building with a sign above two glass doors. In bold the word ‘Dare’ was highlighted in blue and purple. Samantha took out the crumpled piece of paper with an address on it and stepped back to look for an address. She knew before she saw the correct amount of numbers that it was the place she read about on the internet.
“Let’s go in, have a drink, get out and get on with our lives.” Samantha said quietly and wrapped her arms around her stomach tightly.
She hesitated before opening the left door and walking into the dark blue hallway. The music was louder and she could hear the buzz that was often heard when a lot of people were talking. She walked down the narrow hallway until she turned a corner and was faced with the club.
Her black dress suddenly felt extremely shorter than it had before at 5” above her knees. Her hands stayed crossed across her chest as she watched lights flash and people dancing and drinking at the bar. She made her way to an empty spot at the bar and ordered a cosmo. Her long black hair was cascaded down her back and a few strands of her bangs covered her eyes. She could feel different eyes on her back since she walked in and already she was content with checking yet another task off of her list.
