Madeline had a love/hate relationship with Facebook. While she appreciated seeing glimpses into the lives of friends who'd long since disappeared from daily life, she struggled with what to post about her own experiences. She had gone to school to become an english teacher, and post-college ended up getting a job in human resources. Her life was full of insurance claims and benefits packages. She'd been dating the same guy from IT for a year or two, and while at 36 he was a few years older, their dates were pleasant if somewhat uneventful. His lovemaking was kind if unexciting, and from the first moment they kissed she knew it wasn't ever going to be fireworks.
She found herself reading other people's profiles quite often, imagining what it would be like to have a life LIKE THAT. Or to date a man WHO POSTED PICTURES LIKE THAT! She herself felt bound by fear (what would her mother think?) Though her mother wasn't on facebook and could barely figure out email. Somehow her voice always intruded whenever Maddie started to post something to the effect of "Wishing I was the kind of person who had one night stands." She wanted so badly to be honest, to reveal the desires and curiosities she was feeling, but again and again she'd write "My cat Philmore loves to sleep on warm laundry!" with a cute picture of same, or "Fall leaves are beautiful this time of year!" and then hate herself for her lack of courage.
What she needed was inspiration. Courage. Someone or something to break her out of this rut.
And then, one Saturday morning, she opened up facebook, and as she scrolled down her newsfeed, she saw the following post....
