Fallout: The Vault Dwellers' Story - IC

Roark had been up early that morning working with her father on the inventory of medical supplies but there was only so much work one could do before their eyes began to cross. The lights had gone out anyway and while the emergency red lights were on it wasn't a safe work environment. Roark was told to take a break until the lights came back and so she found her way to the entertainment room. She had been there for not more than a few minutes before Robert showed up. He didn't seem to notice her sitting there on the sofa, which was fine, it wasn't like they had spent a lot of time around each other given that she was often working with her father.

But she did recall times when she was younger when she had played with him and the other kids that were now all grown up.

She watched him as he set about selecting what he was going to watch on the projector. She studied him as he did so and when the instructional video started she couldn't help herself.

"How many times have you seen that one?" She asked.

It wasn't but shortly after that the alarms sounded. She moved from her place on the couch.

Robert glanced over at Roark and shrugged, "Better than anything else." He turned back to the video as it started up.

Vault-Tec Advertising Video

Robert smiled to himself, "Odd, but it's all we have of the outside world. It's strange to see some of the stuff they had before the Great War." Suddenly, the alarm systems began to go off. Getting up, Robert ejected the video, when he thought he heard gun firing, going off. "Now what's going on?"

Walking out of the entertainment room, and into the hallway, where he came face-to-face with a protectron. Please cease all hostile actions.

Robert looked at the robot in confusion, "What?" Surrender yourself to the proper authorities.

"What are you talking about?" complained Robert. This is your last warning.

"Warning? For what?" replied Robert. Warning subject to be terminated. then the robot prepared to fire.

Grace waited for a few moments, before heading out into the hallway to check on Sebastian. Her mother was still out like a light, the medication she had been taking always sent her to sleep for half the day. She didn't like walking the hallway alone in the dark, but step by step she made her way outside. Suddenly there was a loud bang and a scream coming from her right, several turns down the hallway. It was enough of a reason for her to turn left, and slowly make her way to the corner.

Peering around it, she caught sight of someone on the ground, and another person crouching over it. It wasn't until she got closer that she saw the man's face illuminated by a flash of red light. It was her father. And Sebastian was checking on him.

"Dad!" she cried, running forwards to kneel at his side. His chest was covered in blood and he was dead. Crying, she took his hand, blood transferring over onto her own as she squeezed tightly.

"Wake up..." she sobbed, but her goodbye was interrupted by gunfire down the hallway she had just come from. As each room along her units hallway was cleared out, and all 'subjects' terminated on the spot. Her mother included, not that Grace had the chance to check, before the light of the Protectron showed that it was nearing the corner, and that they would soon he spotted.

Sebastian couldn't stop Grace from coming to her father. He looked up and noticed the robot coming closer, he wrapped his arm around Grace's waist and dragged her backwards into her familys rooms. She struggled to get back to her father, but Sebastian was a lot bigger than she was. He pulled her into the bathroom area and let the door slide shut. He whispered harsly into her ear, "Grace we can't stay here. We can't let that robot get us too."

She wasn't listening to him. He looked at her face and followed her eyes down to her hands. They were red with her father's blood. He could tell the shock hit her. He bagan to quickly wash her hands off. It was the best he could do at the time. He needed her to focus.

"Grace we need to get back to my place... and find Robert. We can't stay here." He looked at himself...he had left all his stuff at his home. The vault door flashed in his mind. He had thought about it a lot since they found it. Maybe it was time they all got out of the vault...He would think about that once him and his friends were safe.

Roark had heard the alarms but now she heard gunfire. Robert was braver than she as he stood up and headed toward the door. The red haired woman figured that if he was going to find out what was going on then she might as well go too, she was trained medically after all, someone might be hurt. She heard before she saw the protectron in the hall talking to Robert.

It did not sound friend in any way, shape, or form.

Roark emerged from the entertainment room with the full intent to pull Robert away from that machine. Her hand reached for his and she gave him a sharp, rough pull in hopes that he would follow her back into the entertainment room.

If Robert followed her she would start trying to put as much distance between them and the protectron as was possible.

"What the hell was wrong with that?" She asked though she was pretty sure Robert would not have an answer.

Robert felt himself pulled back by some force, just as the Protectron shot with it's laser. Upon hearing Roark's question, he shook his head in confusion, "I don't know. A malfunction maybe. Something to do with their sensor arrays or communications uplink. But I doubt.." but he was interrupted by the sounds of crying.

Roark was surprised as Robert spoke about errors. Well, that seemed like a pretty big error to her. And was it just this one or was it all of them. She heard the crying too. She couldn't immediately place who was crying. Instinctively she started moving towards the distressed noises and hoped that she would be able to help whoever it was that was obviously so upset.

She stopped before she made a move to leave the room.

She looked to Robert.

"What do we do if... If they're all like that?"

Grace knew that Sebastian was right, but there was no way out of the bathroom. So whilst her hands were washed in the basin she wondered what they could do next. There was a loud noise in her parents living room, the protectron must have followed them. But there was no screaming, so perhaps it was just malfunctioning and destroying property.

Whispering, she shivered as if cold. Her face still pale from the shock and she felt as if she wanted to curl up in a corner and sleep. "I think its gone." And quietly, she opened the door just enough to see if the room was clear.

Her eyes picked up no threat and stubbornly she moved out and started to head for the door.

Blood stained a figure tucked into bed in the side room, a bullet mark indicating at least a quick death.

"This can't be happening," she mumbled, leaving her parents apartment.

She couldn't help but cry.
