Favorite Apple?

I'm a big fan of Galas, but I'll cook with anything I can get my hands on. I also don't do the traditional sliced apples in a pie- I double the amount of apples called for and mince them. The result is thick, sweet, spicy goodness (and a really plump pie). Then again, I believe in BIG food- everyone gets fed and fed well here- so what I consider to be a sliver of a pie in width is more like a regular slice in terms of actual contents.

Rome

I like the taste, the loose cellular texture and the way the red tendrils it's way into white flesh...the firmness of the outer sheath penetrating the sweet inside, the invasive desires reaching towards the center...

um...yeah. Ok, I think I'm hungry for more than apples...

Try a 'Pink Lady' if you like Gala. They're just coming on the market about now, out of North GA.

Good choice, trini. I put them in the same category as Gala and Pink Lady. Very much alike.

when i was visiting my sister once in washington state we went grocery shopping and she bought a bag of these apples i'd never heard of. it was love at first bite.....

Interesting the split on Granny Smith as eating apples. I like 'em too, but then I'm a huge fan of tart, tart, tart over sweet. I use to eat lemon slices as a kid, still do now and then.

I will never get the Granny Smith thing.......I can't eat them. It's like eating lemons, and the skin is so squeaky it sets my teeth all on edge.

I've been getting through the summer on Braeburn. Crisp, sweet, juicy. Very pleasant.

At our house, we use granny apples for cooking only. The Braeburn is right up there will the best IMHO :rose:

My grandparents have a Jonathan apple tree, planted in memory of my uncle Jonathan. Actually, it was planted when he was born, and has become a memorial tree.

My favorite eating apples are Pink Ladies. Yummmm!

I don't bake much--my only attempt at an apple pie was pathetic. :(
And the Literotica award for creativity gos to lilredjammies for being the first to mention Pink Ladies at this particular message board. :)

Favorite apple for just eating: Red Delicious.

Favorite apples for baking a pie: equal parts Golden Delicious and Granny Smith.

Mmmmmmm, pie. I just love pie.

BTW, I hear Ohio apples are especially sweet and juicy. ;)

Granny Smiths are good for baking, when plenty of sugar and other things are added. I can't imagine eating them, though, and you always peel them first. :D

Uh, Vincent. Look at post #28 and you'll find the first mention of Pink Lady. But jammies is a smart girl for selecting them nonetheless. :rose:
