Favorite Christmas Songs

Then of course, there's the mr's own version of "Up on the Rooftop" that he loved to torment the kids with:

Up on the rooftop raindeer paws
Our jumps mean old Anti Claus
Down through the chimney lots of socks
Tons of underwear
And a box of rocks

He and I have to be related somehow.

I just have to stop sing the one line in Frosty...."Down to the villiage with a broomstick up his ass..."

Sorry, but...

Slade - Merry Christmas Everybody

Are you hanging up your stocking on your wall?
It's the time that every Santa has a ball
Does he ride a red nosed reindeer?
Does a ton up on his sleigh
Do the fairies keep him sober for a day?

So here it is merry Christmas, Everybody's having fun
Look to the future now, It's only just begun

Are you waiting for the family to arrive?
Are you sure you got the room to spare inside?
Does your granny always tell ya' that the old songs are the best?
Then she's up and rock 'n' rollin' with the rest

So here it is merry Christmas, Everybody's having fun
Look to the future now, It's only just begun

What will your daddy do
When he sees your Mama kissin' Santa Claus?
Ah ah

alt - What will your daddy do
When he sees your Mama givin' Santa Claus a hug

Are you hanging up a stocking on your wall?
Are you hoping that the snow will start to fall?
Do you ride on down the hillside in a buggy you have made?
When you land upon your head then you've been slayed

So here it is merry Christmas, Everybody's having fun
Look to the future now, It's only just begun

So here it is merry Christmas, Everybody's having fun
Look to the future now, It's only just begun

So here it is merry Christmas, Everybody's having fun
Look to the future now, It's only just begun...

The song alone does it for me, but there are overtones as well - it's part of the sound track for a play written by a very dear friend.

#2 - makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck!

I Believe in Father Christmas
(Greg Lake/ Peter Sinfield)

They said there'll be snow at Christmas,
They said there'll be peace on earth,
But instead it just kept on raining,
A veil of tears for the Virgin birth.

I remember one Christmas morning,
The Winter's light and a distant choir,
And the peal of a bell and that Christmas tree smell,
And eyes full of tinsel and fire.

They sold me a dream of Christmas,
They sold me a silent night,
They told me a fairy story,
'Til I believed in the Israelite.

And I believed in Father Christmas,
And I looked to the sky with excited eyes,
Then I woke with a yawn in the first light of dawn,
And I saw him and through his disguise.

I wish you a hopeful Christmas,
I wish you a brave New Year,
All anguish, pain and sadness,
Leave your heart and let your road be clear.

They said there'd be snow at Christmas,
They said there'd be peace on earth,
Hallelujah! Noel!, be it Heaven or Hell,
The Christmas we get, we deserve.

#4 - some christian/pagan crossovers

Lord of the Dance (http://www.stainer.co.uk/lotd.html)

The Holly and the Ivy

The holly and the ivy,
When they are both full grown,
Of all trees that are in the wood,
The holly bears the crown:
O, the rising of the sun,
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ,
Sweet singing in the choir.

The holly bears a blossom,
As white as lily flow'r,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
To be our dear Saviour: Refrain

The holly bears a berry,
As red as any blood,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
To do poor sinners good: Refrain

The holly bears a prickle,
As sharp as any thorn,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
On Christmas Day in the morn: Refrain

The holly bears a bark,
As bitter as the gall,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
For to redeem us all: Refrain

The holly and the ivy,
When they are both full grown,
Of all trees that are in the wood,
The holly bears the crown: Refrain

1. It's "The Night Santa Went Crazy" by Weird Al. I'll always remember it because my husband brought that CD for me when I was in labor in the hospital. :)

My faves include "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear," "In the Bleak Midwinter," "Deck the Halls," ye olde tried and trusted "Adeste" because my mom sings it in French, I in Latin, and my father in English; "On Christmas Night" from my madrigal days, "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," "Carol of the Bells," and "While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks By Night," frequently becoming "While Shepherds Washed their Socks" when dad and I get going! The first Amy Grant Christmas album's also a favorite.

For silliness, I love "Be Claus I Got High," "Hark the Harelipped Angels Sing," and the Muppets "Christmas is Coming."

I HATE hearing "What Child is This?" as I find it a perversion of a much better (and far less dogmatic) song, "Greensleeves."

"The Christmas Song", specifically Nat King Cole's version...

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire
Jack Frost nipping at your nose
Yule-tide carols being sung by a choir
And folks dressed up like Eskimos.

Everybody knows a turkey
and some mistletoe
Help to make the season bright
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow
Will find it hard to sleep tonight.

They know that Santa's on his way
He's loaded lots of toys
and goodies on his sleigh
And every mother's child is gonna spy
To see if reindeer
really know how to fly.

And so I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although it's been said
many times, many ways
Merry Christmas to you.

What can I say? Sometimes I'm boring...

oooh grandma got run over by a reindeer is such a cool song. I love it!

Slade "Merry christmas everybody." IS christmas. I know the season is really upon us :)

"Walking in a winter wonderland" too if noones mentioned it

Just for the fact it gets stuck in my head *L*

Away in a manger is lovely too, often makes me cry and "oh come all ye faithful" "We three kings" "Whilst shepherds watched."

Ahh I'm a sucker for the lot of'em really!

jewels version of Rudolf
harry connick jr. all his xmas cd, When My Heart Finds Christmas. *love it*
bette midler sings rosemary clooney ~white xmas~
ave maria ... quirky about who sings it though.. hrm
oh yeah!
barenaked ladies just came out with an xmas cd...
love their version of 'I Saw Three Ships'

Peace by Norah Jones
Song for a Winter's Night by Sarah Mclachlan
A Scottish Christmas... a copulation by Maggie Sansone ... hammered dulcimer.

i could go on and on.. ill stop here and say:

im such a sap... i love it all really.

"What Child is This"- Doesnt matter who sings it!

"White Christmas"- BBBBing Crosby

I really tend to like the blues, jazz and country singers that do Christmas albums, dont know what it is but they remind me more of Christmas I guess.

My all time favorite on Christmas Eve is "Deck the Halls"
It was always the very last song, of the very last service for Christmas eve, after 4 services in a row and a whole lot of communion wine, I truly loved that song!

Chistmas (Baby, Please come home) - U2

Little Drummer Boy - Bob Seger

Christmas is a Time to Say I Love You - Billy squire

From my time living in New York City I will always remember a very old Christmas song:

Silver Bells

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks.
Dressed in holiday style
In the air
There's a feeling
of Christmas

Children laughing
People passing
Meeting smile after smile
and on every street corner you'll hear

Silver bells, silver bells
It's Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them sing
Soon it will be Christmas day

Strings of street lights
Even stop lights
Blink a bright red and green
As the shoppers rush
home with their treasures

Hear the snow crunch
See the kids bunch
This is Santa's big scene
And above all this bustle
You'll hear

Silver bells, silver bells
It's Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them sing
Soon it will be Christmas day

It's Christmas at ground zero
There's music in the air
The sleigh bells are ringing and the carolers are singing
While the air raid sirens blare

It's Christmas at ground zero
The button has been pressed
The radio just let us know
That this is not a test

Everywhere the atom bombs are dropping
It's the end of all humanity
No more time for last-minute shopping
It's time to face your final destiny

It's Christmas at ground zero
There's panic in the crowd
We can dodge debris while we trim the tree
Underneath the mushroom cloud

You might hear some reindeer on your rooftop
Or Jack Frost on your windowsill
But if someone's climbing down your chimney
You better load your gun and shoot to kill

It's Christmas at ground zero
And if the radiation level's okay
I'll go out with you and see all the new
Mutations on New Year's Day

It's Christmas at ground zero
Just seconds left to go
I'll duck and cover with my Yuletide lover
Underneath the mistletoe

It's Christmas at ground zero
Now the missiles are on their way
What a crazy fluke, we're gonna get nuked
On this jolly holiday

Fairytale Of New York

Oh Thats my fav too!! I also like -

Santa Baby
written by J. Javits and P. Springer
originally sung by Ertha Kitt
----------
Santa baby, slip a sable under the tree, for me
I've been an awful good girl
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa baby, an out-of-space convertible too, light blue
I'll wait up for you dear
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight

Think of all the fun I've missed
Think of all the fellas that I haven't kissed
Next year I could be oh so good
If you'd check off my Christmas list
Boo doo bee doo

Santa honey, I wanna yacht and really that's
Not a lot
I've been an angel all year
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa cutie, there's one thing I really do need, the deed
To a platinum mine
Santa cutie, and hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa baby, I'm filling my stocking with a duplex, and checks
Sign your 'X' on the line
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight

Come and trim my Christmas tree
With some decorations bought at Tiffany's
I really do believe in you
Let's see if you believe in me
Boo doo bee doo

Santa baby, forgot to mention one little thing, a ring
I don't mean a phone
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight

Hurry down the chimney tonight
Hurry down the chimney tonight

Another fave.

Kidnap the Santy Claws

Kidnap Mr. Santy claws?
I wanna do it
Lets draw straws
Jack said we should work together
Three of a kind
Bird of a feather
now and forever
WEEEEEEE, LA LA LA
Kidnap the Santy Claws
Lock him up real tight
Throw away the key and then
Turn off al the lights
first we should set some bait
inside a nasty trap and wait
when he comes a-sniffing
we will snap the trap
and close the gate
wait i got a better plan
to catch this big red lobster man
lets pop him in a boiling pot
and when hes done well butter him up
Kidnap the santy claws
throw him in a box
bury him for niety days
then see if he talks
then Mr. oogie boogie man
can take the whole thing over then
he'll be so pleased I do declare
that he will cook him RARE
WWWWWWWWEEEEEEE
I say that we take a cannon
aim it at his door and then
knock three times
and when he answers
Santy claws will be no more
Your so stupid, think now
if we blow him up to smithereens
we may lose some pieces
and jack will beat us black and green
Kidnap the Sandy Claws
Tie him in a bag
Throw him in the ocean
Then, see if he is sad
Because Mr. Oogie Boogie is the meanest guy around
If I were on his Boogie list,
I'd get out of town
He'll be so pleased by our success
That he'll reward us too, I bet
Perhaps he'll make his special brew
Of snake and spider stew Ummm!
We're his little henchmen and
We take our job with pride
We do our best to please him
And to stay on his good side
I wish my cohorts weren't so dumb
I'm not the dumb one
You're no fun
I've got something, listen now
This one is real good, you'll see
We'll send a present to his door
Up there'll be a note to read
Now, in the box we'll wait and hide
Until his curiosity entices him to look inside
And then we'll have him One, two, three
Kidnap the Sandy Claws, beat him with a stick
Lock him up for ninety years, see what makes him tick
Kidnap the Sandy Claws, chop him into bits
Mr. Oogie Boogie is sure to get his kicks
Kidnap the Sandy Claws, see what we will see
Lock him in a cage and then, throw away the key

Yes, I know. I'm a sick and twisted man.

You know what's worse?

Those are my redeeming qualities.

Barenaked Ladies!

We lost this song when our hard drive crashed, but the Barenaked Ladies song with the line "Santa's coming and he's going to kick your ass..." is AWESOME. And a very catchy tune.

Ooooooooooo ... I'm off to Amazon to order it! I just love their version of "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen" from one of Rosie's old CDs.

I also love Alison Moyet's "Coventry Carol" and "Where Are You Christmas?" (Faith Hill -- on the soundtrack from "The Grinch") and "Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth" performed by David Bowie & Bing Crosby.

There are TONS more, but I'll stop now.

Yay for Christmas songs! Hehe.

I like 'em all. :)
We have a Judd's Christmas tape somewhere, that whole thing is awesome.
Then this Dolly and Kenny tape too.. God those are from my childhood, lol.
Anyhow, when I think about Christmas, this song is the first one that pops into my head. :)

"Christmas To Remember" ~Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers

You've made this a Christmas to remember
Springtime feelin's in the middle of December
Strangers meet and they willingly surrender
Oh! What a Christmas to remember

Almost went to Aspen but something told me no
I considered Mammoth but there wasn't enough snow
And I even thought of Gatlinburg but that seemed so far to go
So I headed up to Tahoe for a Christmas on the slopes

And I had fantasized about Christmas in this way
Curled up by a fireplace in a Tahoe ski chalet
With a fast talking lover and some slow burning wood
But even in my wildest dreams it never got this good and

You've made this a Christmas to remember
Springtime feelin's in the middle of December
Change the radio and I'll turn the lights down dimmer
Oh! What a Christmas to remember

Strangers when we met, lovers as we leave
Christmas to remember, too good to believe
Don't know how or when, but I know we'll meet again
We'll come blowin' back to somewhere like some wild restless winter's wind

And you've made this a Christmas to remember
Springtime feelin's in the middle of December
Neath the mistletoe you kissed me warm and tender
Oh! What a Christmas to remember

We loved and laughed and played and joked
Sang Christmas songs and talked to folks
Sleighed the fields and skied the slopes
Then to the lodge for dinner
But now it's time for us to go
As our hearts melt like chimney snow
There's just one thing I want to know
Can we do this next winter
Oh! What a Christmas to remember

You've made this a Christmas to remember
Springtime feelin's in the middle of December
Though the fire is hot, we'll just have to let it simmer
Oh! What a Christmas to remember

I like the community productions of Handel's The Messiah with about 1000 voices.

Songs: Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht sung a capella.
