"Nobody on this land is free, Gleam. Not even me."
She listened from where she stood, his words, hurt, to say the very least. She knew of the horrors that befell many of the captured. But to hear those horrors put into words, to hear him speak of it, because he had seen it, she knew than that he had seen it. That was at least some of the darkness she had seen in his eyes. He has witnessed the horror first hand. Had that been what tipped his hand? What drove him to begin freeing the very ferals he captured? But... Did he not deliver them first to that hell, before rescuing them from it?
She shook her head. His words, her mind, all were a jumble now. And it was not a good jumble.
And she too, knew that they were not alone. Jakob was quite close by. And still moving. He was not advancing tho. It was obvious he was waiting to see who would win this little confrontation.
"All you humans want do do is fuck. That's what you said right? You think Jakob just came out here to say hello? Pretty sure if there wasn't more than fucking to me, I'd have taken you by now and done it in your own bed."
God DAMN he was confusing her. He was right, why had she not thought of that?
"I can handle Jakob" she spat back. She was brave, there was no discounting that. Could she handle Jakob, that was another matter. But, there was another, male, feline, also in the area. The Panther? She was not sure. She could not devote the senses needed to determine that, not right now.
"There are 8 ferals currently living on my land. I hope to add more. I know all their names. I know all their stories. I remember because its important that I do so. Its important that I never forget what I saved them from. That's what fuels me to keep doing what I do."
"Were you not the one who delivered them to hell in the first place, only to rescue them?" The question was more directed at the fact that Lucian was a Hunter at all, not that he had personally captured the 8 he spoke about. Maybe not those 8, but another 8. He had been hunting and trapping for a very very long time.
"Do you know why they're here, Gleam? Because you ARE a possession, and a prized one at that. One that will be hunted until the day she is captured or killed. And in the event that I lose today, our watcher intends to claim what I could not. And in the event that you kill me today......the word will spread."
"The "lord" of the land is dead. And hunters will be free to hunt here again. So tell me who is really free?"
That gave her pause, before she stepped out into the open to face him.
Did she have the right to change so many lives? She certainly did not want that particular responsibility.
"There is a difference between killing you and beating you, Lucian. I will not take the responsibility for so many lives. Our deal was that I beat you in this challenge. When the deal was made, I wanted you dead. I do not wish to see that now. But I want my freedom. NO, I have not been hung upside down and tortured, NO, I have not been made to mate a brother, NO, I have not had to fight to the death my own kinsman. But that does not make my freedom any less priceless to me. No, you did not rape me on site, and for that I respect you. But, Lucian, I am NOT a possession, I am Gleam. And if I beat you and one of the watcher's approaches, I will fight that one as well. That one, may die."
Again, she was not going to cower away, that was for sure.
"Now either put that fucking collar back on, or come at me. I've not got all night, let's get this over with."
"The time for words is done Lucian."
"If you intend to collar me again, it had best be in steel"
That, was a direct challenge.
She crouched down, she had no weapon, but neither did he. He was about to find out that despite her lithe, sleek form, she was a strong as the tiger that had fathered her.
She moved then, as his name slipped past her lips, low, into his midsection, using momentum, and her own strength, to knock him down, or at least try, to knock him off balance. Her fangs bared, she managed to rake along his jawline, drawing blood, and most likely, leaving a nasty scar. She was working on pure adrenelin, that and the deep seated fear that he would beat her, and this was just another bad mistake she had just made. Seemed when it came to Lucian, she kept making those mistakes, of course other than when she killed that band of hunters. There was no mistake in that. But that was with a weapon, and even tho she was sleek, and quite strong, Gleam was not a fighter. She never had been.
