"Field of Dreams" -- A "Fear The Walking Dead" Story & Game

The next morning, they got to work on the priorities.

Kimmie Green organized the list of medications in priority of need. They had to find insulin within 2 days and other heart-related medications within 2 days after that. Making matters worse, most (d20=16 x .05 = 80%) of the people who needed them lived elsewhere than the neighborhoods near PK Park; to find the drugs they needed, they would have to raid homes, businesses, and pharmacies, with the nearest of the pharmacies being half a mile away as the crow flies and three times that distance by road.

Connie organized the Kitchen Staff to begin cooking regular meals and preserving the perishable foods. Some of the children joined the effort after they realized that the items being made included candies, pies, and other fun treats that could be preserved longer term.

Harry's task today was to organize and lead the Squads in ridding the stadium of the Dead. He organized 4 teams, with one of the original residents leading 3 newcomers, all of whom had volunteered:
  • Harry, +10 -- Warrior Leader
  • Robert, +9 -- warrior, builder
  • Kiesha, +9 -- warrior
  • Yolanda, +8 -- warrior,

Two teams worked together on clearing the upper concourse first. It was learned by watching the security feeds that occasionally the Dead stumbled down staircases from the Upper Concourse to the Lower Concourse. So clearing the Lower first made little sense:

There were a couple of close calls, and 3 of the new residents had minor injuries and were sent back under escort by the more experienced Warriors. But after less than an hour of serious clean up fighting, followed by another two hours of organized wandering to ensure they'd check every nook and cranny, the Squads had left every Dead dead above the Lower Level of PK Park.

Kiesha thought it was important to pay the Dead respect, so -- with some of them providing cover -- most of the Squad spent another hour or so bringing all of the Dead, as well as their victims who hadn't turned, out to the middle of the concourse. They covered them -- their faces at the least -- with jackets and such, and Kiesha spoke some words over them.

"Connie wanted us to check the concession stands up here," Yolanda said once they were done, "and the Suites. There should be more food, alcohol."

Robert chimed in, "Why can't we live up here?" The others looked at him and he chuckled. "What, have none of you ever been in one of these Suites?" He gestured them to follow, and a moment later they were all standing inside one of the 8 Suites. He swept his arms like a game show model and asked, "See? See? What did I tell you?"

The rooms were lavish, with the only thing not in them that you would find in an expensive hotel room being a big king sized bed. There was a wet bar, a kitchenette, 12 seat dining table, four couches, twice as many cushions arm chairs, and more.

"I'd say we found homes for everyone," Harry agreed. "I'll suggest it to Connie, but I'm sure she's gonna say go for it."

"Why does that concession lady get to decide?" one of the new people -- who'd played little part in the battle -- asked with a dismissive tone. "I'm moving up here whether she or you want me to or--"

He wasn't able to finish his statement, though, as Harry -- who was 9 inches taller and 70 pounds heavier -- grasped the man by the arm with a pain-causing grip and began hauling him out of the room. The man was groaning out in pain and struggling vainly to get loose as Harry moved him down the concourse to the railing of the stairs. He pushed him onto the rail, causing him to almost go over it to the Lower Concourse below.

"What the hell?" the man screamed out once he'd gotten his feet back on the concrete and Harry had spun him around to face him.

"I'm sick and tired of the lack of respect," Harry growled at the man. He looked back at the others, particularly the new people who hadn't been here when Connie and Harry and the other originals had cleared the now-Secure Area without them. "We lost a good man making it possible for you fuckers to be here. Kendall gave his life to protect us, and we have risked out lives to save your asses, and you're gonna show us some respect or I'm gonna feed you to the Dead, got it?"

"Yeah, yeah, I'm sorry, man," the guy apologized desperately. He looked like he wanted to say more but didn't. When Harry pushed him away back toward the others, he simply stepped away and again said softly, "Sorry."

Harry looked to the Squad and growled, "If any of you don't want to be here, just say so. We'll set you up with a backpack or bag full of food and water and you can get the fuck out. Otherwise, you'll do what you're told by those of us who have been here from the start. Got it?"

There was silence from some and nods from others. Then, they got back to work, heading down to the Lower Concourse to once again start killing the dead. This level was much wider and much more open than the Upper Level, so the entire Squad worked together as one: they started at one end in a skirmish line and just stabbed, cut, and clubbed every Dead that came at them:

Again, 2 of the newcomers were injured, but again no one got bit. And one by one, all of the gates leading into the Lower Concourse were closed, and the Squad turned back to search extensively for stragglers, finding only 1 and killing it, too.

And then, with a lot of work and only 5 minor injuries, PK Park's interior -- the building, not the field -- was secure.

Kimmie Green and Vicki Evans had gathered all the First Aid kits from the Pantry and the accessible rooms and hallways and assembled them together to do an inventory of them.

They had just finished when they heard fast moving feet coming their way down the Pantry hallway. They looked at each other with fear: was it the Dead coming to kill and eat them? But then they heard cries of pain coming from one of those approaching, and when people burst through the door of the Main Office, they were all Living.

In the end, the pair of Nurses tended to 5 people -- 4 men and 1 woman -- who were injured in the fight against the Dead. There were no bites, thank goodness: there was a twisted ankle, a sprained wrist, a concussion (from a fall), and then cuts and abrasions from the tussles.

All of the injured were cleaned up, bandaged as necessary, given pain killers and/or antibiotics (as necessary), and told to rest. (d20=1 for trauma; the other rolls were mid to high. d=14 for male; 1-4,5-8,9-12,13-16 male; 17-20 female in case you were wondering how I came up with that). The only real concern the pair of Nurses had was that one of the men, Jacob, was demonstrating serious shock from the incident. Only time would tell if he was going to survive the terror he'd suffered and seen. (He wouldn't, but there was no knowing that now, of course.)

When the Squads finally returned from the clearing of the concourses, Connie went to Harry privately. She told him she understood that they were working hard and taking great risks at making the building safe. "But, we have to make a trip out into the city. We need insulin and..."

She pulled out a sheet of paper, unfolded it, and handed it to Harry. On it were listed more than 20 medications that were taken by the lot of the residents. She told him with a serious tone, "And here's the rub. Some of these people, they are taking meds for every thing from heart disease to kidney failure to whatever, and they don't even know what their prescribed drugs are. I mean, how are we supposed to get them what they need if they don't even remember what their taking?" (d20=17 regarding mental prognoses; disregard.)

"Okay, listen, I have an idea," Harry told her reassuringly. "Lane County Mental Health Services is just down the road, on MLK. I used to take my brother there before he died a few years back. It has a pharmacy. I can't guarantee that it's going to have everything we need 'cause it's mental health, not physical. I don't know if there's gonna be a difference until we get there. And I don't even know whether or not it's still gonna be intact after all the shit we've seen. But, we'll try for it, tomorrow. Okay?"

Connie thanked him, saying, "I wouldn't send you out there if it wasn't important. you know that."

Robert came up and shared his idea about everyone moving up to the Suites, and Connie thought it was a wonderful idea. "I think it's less likely that we will be surprised by the Dead if we're up there, so yeah, I'm all for it."

They called everyone to attention, had them get anything they'd arrived with, and headed upstairs. They spread out relatively evenly between 6 of the 8 Suites, leaving the other 2 vacant for future use. When someone complained that the boss people were going to get their own suites while all the others had to share, Connie quickly said, "We're going to use one of them as the Infirmary, and the other one is for the kids. We needs a place for them, for playing, a library -- when we get some books, that is -- a school, and more."

There was so more nagging, but it went quiet eventually as everyone did the best they could to get comfortable.

Harry, Robert, Kenny, and some of the new people who lived more locally spent the morning on the most northern, outside edge of the roof, looking to the west down Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd. They couldn't see the Lane County Mental Health Services building from here because of the sometimes-century old trees growing between LCMHS and PK Park. But they could see the mayhem that had resulted from the Day of the Dead Rising: people had desperately run for their cars or simply run away on foot; a traffic jam had occurred -- to the east, as well -- and the Dead rampaged through all of it, biting and killing and eating their way westward for as far as the eye could see.

Even now, there were dozens of Dead milling aimlessly about the road, sidewalks, and lawns; Harry could see almost 100 Dead just from here...

How many might there be that he couldn't even see?

"It's a risk, but we have to do it," Harry told the others.

"Why?" one of the new asked. "I don't need any meds. Do any of you?" When no one spoke up a personal need, the new resident asked, "Then why are we doing this? Why are we risking our lives for some weak assed--"

"Shut the fuck up!" Robert snapped. He pointed to the access point, demanding, "Get the fuck off my roof."

The new resi' hesitated but then did as told when Harry gave a look that he agreed. One more of the new folk departed, but the other two said they were more than willing to help. "We're all one community now, right? One for all, all for one, like the Musketeers."

They spoke more about how to get to Health Services. It was known that the Dead were attracted to sound, so it was decided that firearms would only be used as a last extreme. That was something they could do to improve their odds.

It was also known that the Dead were attracted to movement, but there wasn't much that could be done about that. Or was there? Robert asked, "What if we went at night, tonight, after dark?"

The debate that followed was heated: going out at night meant fewer Dead seeing the Squad but also meant it would be harder to see the Dead coming, and while the former was a pro for Harry and Robert and some of the others, the latter was a serious con for the others.

Harry and Connie gathered the adults of the Community in the Fridge Hallway and told them, "We're going out tonight. I'm looking for volunteers. Volunteers! No one goes out there who isn't one hundred percent confident in themselves and in those you see around you who step up, too. This is not a game. This is dangerous. There is a good chance some of us won't return."

There was some more discussion, and Harry said, "There is no shame in not volunteering. There is no shame in not going out there tonight or any night or any day. I'm heading for the Main Office to collect weapons. We'll go out at dark. Anyone who wants to be part of this, part of helping the Community, come to the Office at six. We leave at seven."

He thanked everyone for coming and left. By five, people had begun arriving: Robert, Kiesha, and Yolanda were first; Kenny arrived as expected, but Kimmie -- offering her Medic services; and over the next hour or so, (d20/2=2, crap!) of the new folk arrived and volunteered.

Connie wasn't too excited to learn that only 2 of the new people had volunteered to go with Harry's Squad to raid the pharmacy. But then, she didn't want to go and wasn't going, so who was she to be critical. She did, however, go and have a casual, non-pressuring talk with Gregor Nazarov and his wife, Julia, about how important these prescription drugs could be, now and in the future. It didn't take much to get the army veteran to agree to go, and as soon as he had, another of the new folk had volunteered as well.

100 Dead...

That was what they were facing (between PK Park to LCMHS).

Harry, Connie, and the others who had taken more of a command role in the community sat down and talked together again about the plan. After that but before they left, they again sat down with everyone involved, which included some who would remain behind.

Alexa had tested the Security radios and trained everyone on how to use them. They had more than enough of them to go around; some had had to have blood cleaned from them after being found on dead, mutilated Security Personnel who had been killed by the Dead or had become Dead and had had to be killed by the Squad.

2 people who weren't going were instead stationed up on the roof to watch the Squad's progression. There was doubt that they would be of much good because the Squad's plan was to get into the trees on the north side of MLK Jr Blvd as quickly as possible. (Some thought it would be better to stay out in the open where they could see the Dead coming, but that would be up to Harry once they got out there.

The plan was simple: get to the pharmacy, get the drugs and first aid kits and whatever else seemed valuable to the Community, and get back. It was generally agreed that so long as it was safe to continue onward, they would, and they would do so without the firearms; but the moment it looked like they were going to be overwhelmed, guns were authorized but the group would backtrack, because all guns would do is attract more dead.
