I searched, and unless I'm blind, I don't see a specific place to make a post about film, so here I am...

I recently re-watched "Home Alone" (1990). When Harry (Joe Pesci) grabs the doorknob that's red hot...he cries out and runs to the snowbank to cool it. Then they show his hand; the initial from the doorknob has been branded into his palm.

Then it hit me. There's another film I've also seen MANY times...and I wondered...is this a nod to "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" (1981)?

The Nazi agent does the same thing with the headpiece in the burning bar fight scene, and later we see his branded palm.

I doubt I'm the first person in the world to spot this, so I'm not taking credit, but it's still really cool to me, so I wanted to share it.

In that vein, have any of you ever seen a reference to a film in another film (sequels don't count)?

There are a few obvious ones that we all know because thanks to the internet, we've heard them over and over, like George Lucas' reference to "1138" in all his films, and Kevin Smith's films all take place in the same universe, so they all reference each other a lot.

So let's try to skip the easy ones. I'm talking about stuff that you realized yourself, and wonder if anyone else ever spotted it.

What do you have to share?

EDIT: Obviously this thread may contain spoilers, so you may want to tread carefully if you haven't seen some of the films mentioned. :)

Pretty obvious, but in Toy Story 3, one of the toys is Totoro. An obvious nod to Studio Ghibli, which is a big inspiration to the people at Pixar.

Kevin Smith films are full of pop culture references, but one that made me laugh was in Dogma. When Silent Bob throws the two guys off the train, he sees a scared passenger who's afraid he's next, and Bob points at the door and says "No ticket". (When Indiana Jones throws a guy out of the zeppelin in The Last Crusade.)

well something i watched recently (and i have watched many times) in Mulholland Drive there is a scene where appears sunset boulevard in reference to the tile movie, and Mulholland Drive is in many ways david lynch version of sunset boulevard.
and it also appears a car used in the movie sunset boulevard.

In Saturday Night Fever, there is a poster of Rocky & Serpico in Tony's room.

Also in Home Alone, the short clip of the crime movie "Angels With Filthy Souls" is a nod, or rather, a tip of the fedora to James Cagney's classic movie, "Angels With Dirty Faces" featuring the future Bowery Boys.

"And keep the change ya filthy animal!" ;)

In "Trading Places" Randolph and Mortimer Duke are financially ruined. In "Coming To America" Prince Akeem gives the now-homeless brothers all his traveling cash, and one brother says to the other, "We're back!".

In the film The Departed by Martin Scorsese there is an X each time someone dies. This was an homage to the 30s Scarface.

In the film "Reign Of Fire" with Christian Bale & Matthew McConaughey, Bale & another actor enact, to entertain the kids, the scene in Star Wars where Darth Vader reveals " I am your father."

In the movie "Robin Hood Men In Tights" Dom Deluise parodies Marlon Brando's the Godfather character, calling himself Don Don Giovanni.

Ok, you want plain English: Robin is gonna be dead. D-E-D. Dead.

In the film Armageddon, the characters of Owen Wilson & Ben Affleck are discussing who is who in relation to Star Wars.

"Chewy! Have you ever seen Star Wars?"

In the 1974 movie Earthquake with Eva Gardner, before the big quake hits, people in the movie theater are watching Clint Eastwood in the movie "High Plains Drifter".

In the remake movie Italian Job with Charlize Theron, when the villain played by Ed Norton is being spied on, a clip of the original Italian Job starring Michael Caine is shown on his tv.

In the 1998 movie Godzilla, the character of Matthew Broderick, Dr. Niko "Nick" Tatopoulos is named after the creator of Godzilla for this movie, Patrick Tatopoulos.

O Brother, Where Art Thou references and is really influenced by Wizard of Ox. A good example occurs during the KKK scene. It is really is based off of the scene in the Wizard of Oz where the Scarecrow, Lion and Tin man try to sneak into the witches castle. The guards are chanting the way the KKK does and even doing a similar dance, and the three heroes steal disguises from the guards/KKK.

In the recent movie "The Martian" with Matt Damon, to facilitate his rescue, Matt offers to puncture his space suit in the palm of his hand, allowing the compressed air to escape so he can fly "like Iron Man."
