Yeah, the book isn't really kid appropriate, although I doubt there are many 12 year old that would get too far into the book... The musical is much more kid friendly!
Glad you're enjoying it so far! Greggory Maguire is awesome! I have a few of his other books as well, but can never seem to find the time to read them... but his concepts are brilliant. ie. Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister which is a retelling of Cinderella through the PoV of one the stepsister's. Mirror mirror, based on Snow White, Wicked of course! great stuff!
