Evelyn stood in the empty bedroom alone. She had been prepared for her husband, her long dark hair now falling down her back in soft tendrils and elegant silk night gown placed over her body. She regarded herself in the mirror and appreciated the view. She was still beautiful, her dark hair, her creamy skin and vivid green eyes were appealing. Her husband had often commented, rather bawdily about her figure, her full breasts, the curve of her hips…so she assumed that it was pleasing to others.
But then again, she wasn’t in a situation that she or her new husband had chosen for themselves. The man…rather the boy, had the money and she had the family history that his family so longed for. He would cover her now dead husband’s debt and she would allow his family to rise into the aristocracy. She knew little of the man, having barely met him before the vows had been exchanged, but he didn’t seem to be cruel..or a philanderer, which was a relief, but then again, how could anyone know a man’s true demeanor?
She moved to the bed and the maid put the blankets over her. The maid exited the room to let the groom know that his bride was ready for him. She was nervous, all over again, at what this night would bring. She simply hoped it wouldn’t be any of the pain or suffering her previous husband had caused. Love..she wasn’t sure she would let that fog her brain ever again.
