She could hear voices, but couldn’t see anyone, why was that she thought? Bad car accident…poor thing…only her name….then there was nothing again for awhile but she couldn’t tell how long. She wasn’t even sure she was thinking when everything was turned off, only that time had lapsed, or felt like it did.
Again with the voices, male and female, she could tell that much in their voice. It sounded like they were saying something about the poor thing…no other visitors…ID bracelet…name….lucky to have someone like you…
“Whose lucky, who are you talking about?” the words came out of her mouth before she even realized it. “Who are you people?” she asked, now able to see what looked to be a nurse and a man she didn’t recognize.
“I’ll go get the doctor,” the nurse said, leaving the man there alone with her.
Okay, I’m in a hospital, how did I get here? I can’t remember…oh my god…I can’t remember anything….These thoughts and others raced through her mind as she started to panic. She found herself trying to breath, to catch her breath.
The nurse was back with what looked like a doctor and he tried to calm her down while the nurse gave her some kind of shot. The strange man stood there just watching and she wondered who he was, maybe she was supposed to know him. The shot was finally working and she was calming down, relaxing, breathing again.
“Amber, you’ve been in a car accident, but you’re going to be fine. I’m Dr. Edwards and I have been your doctor since you arrived here. You were in pretty bad shape, but now that you finally woke up you should make a complete recovery with some rehabilitation.” He was smiling at her as he talked, trying to keep her calm.
“Who the hell is Amber?” she asked, not recognizing the name.
“That’s you of course, at least that was the name on your ID bracelet.” Dr. Edwards said, then told the nurse to send for the neurologist.
“Who are you then, do I know you?” she asked the stranger.
