So you like that idea of how they met? It was just a rough sketch compared to how I would write her memories of it in flashback, but I thought it was a good way for them to develop a mutual respect and trust for each other from their first meeting. They both end up saving the other's life, each in their own way.

And as Cheska mentioned, she put in her history a perfect opening for her character to meet the paladin. I could see them being long term companions too.

Now Mae, I think, might grate on the paladin with her chaotic nature, and maybe his straight laced nature grates on her too. So I could see them being on again/off again adventure companions. They like each other and maybe are attracted to each other too, but they just can't stay together for more than an adventure or two before they drive each other crazy. Then they go their separate ways for a while, but inevitably meet up again.

But maybe with the addition of a couple more party members to act as a sort of buffer between their personalities, then they might have a better chance to stay together.

I don't want to decide anyone else's history, but this is just some thoughts I had. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's ideas.

Yeah I do like it. And this is what brainstorming is all about. Though a couple of "points". For story sake, maybe it was a poison that got though his divine health, or would have to be a special case of a diereses or magical effect that knock him around, but I really do like the idea that he wonders around aimlessly, not sure of where he is, or what he was doing. I like playing a confused character.. maybe its because I am so confused at times myself.

And yeah, One of the things I keep thinking about with Mae is maybe Jayce met her in a bar... fight ;p He respects her prowess, but not her attitude so much. But decides that since she's way out numbered, enters the fray, only to have her maybe get pissed off at the unwelcome help.

I also like the idea of the Paladin maybe helping Darya respect her powers more when she was younger. The next part of the "background" story for Jayce is how he learns what it is to be a Paladin of Freedom (Oh, I get to bluff... so maybe I am so not straight lace as one things ;p), and gets his head knocked around a lot by his mentor... hhhhmmm but I don't know if a young woman with magical wild powers would like the idea of having her head knocked around to get a point across. Could lead to lots of pain later one....

EDIT: Why do I look back down on this and think.. Rules... WHO NEEDS StINKY RULES.

A poison could work. I was thinking backwards and thought that maybe him and his companions were just in a battle before, and one of the enemies had an envenomed weapon that gave some kind of infection/fever or poison that just took time to take full effect and then wear off later. Cheska's sorcerer could have healed the actual wound, but maybe it didn't stop the poison's effects. The poison doesn't kill him, either because it isn't designed to, or more likely, his divine health gives him some resistance, like you said. Maybe it delays its effects, but eventually the poison wears him down. Perhaps the last combat with the healer's attackers is what gives the poison the chance to work finally.

Anyhow, she still could nurse him back, neutralizing poison instead of curing disease. Same outcome. And when his companions finally figure out where he wandered off to, they find him with the healer, both naked in the bedrolls. Of course, its all perfectly innocent, right? ;) But both he and the healer would get a ration of grief and teasing wouldn't they. :D

Heheh, yep. I can see they would. "So, Jayce, you and this girl... what did you do last night?"

"Nothing, I was fever-addlered, and no clue of what I was doing."

"Oh, come on now, you didn't use that holy sword on her and bless her."

Blush. "I have no idea what you are talking about." Fails bluff roll, and hangs head in shame.

Sounds like fun, I look forward to checking this out when it gets launched.

Sounds good. Mae would really grate on anyone that would be lawful, if only to what them squirm than anything really. As for how she met the paladin, I couldn't think of anything more fitting. I can see him coming to help, only to get swung at too a few times.

I'm seeing this come together now. We run into Mae again in this town, and being an old friend to us, we invite her to join us again. Or perhaps she is the roguish type who is getting the lead on the pit fighting action from the local shady character. Somehow I could easily imagine Mae hanging out with a shady character. ;)

Or maybe she is spotted by one of us talking to the shady guy and we want to renew friendships with her, but we don't want to interrupt her date.

Oh yah. Mae is use to slummin' it. She's use to taking jobs solely based on the money. No doubt the gold pours through the slavery rings and the pit fighting. For whatever reason, either being offered a bodyguard job or maybe some action in the ring.

While she's in it for the gold I'm sure a past relationship with the group would lead her to make a moral choice in the right direction!

This thread and the game/story to come, got me thinking about another character I wanted to play one day.

There is a goddess called Wee Jass, she is from D&D and she is the Lawful goddess of Death.
Now, too many people instantly think evil, no.. Lawful Neutral.

Wee Jass promotes the rules of Law among the dead and how they are dealt with.

She is also the Goddess of Love, Beauty, and Magic.

Her other titles are the Witch Queen.

I had created, but never played, a Cleric of Wee Jass whose job is to put the Unlawful dead back in the ground. "You! Back in the box!"

Her calling was at birth when she died, and came back.. hence she was is also a sorceress of the Death Bloodline.

But every GM I spoke to was sure I wanted a Chaotic evil character... idiots.

Good ol' Wee Jass. Haven't thought about her in a long time. I always liked the concept of the Goddess. The idea is awesome too, I can't (well I can) believe that people's minds go straight to chaotic evil with a concept like that.

I think it would depend on how you look at Death. Death is the great liberator. It frees people from their flawed mortal shell and lets their spirit return to its source. It would be a blessed thing, I think.

That is the way her Order approaches it.

Life is a gift and Death is the next chapter and the proper order of things.
Death should only be halted or disrupted when one has obligations...
Yes, the Order would raise the dead to work off a debt if there was no living person to handle the situation.

And agreements and such must be signed, no shenanigans..

I'd like to hold on to see what cmky can post when her move is completed, but I'm already thinking of the first post, how to start, what information to reveal, etc.

Maybe we should wait for her, in case she wants to be part of the group from the start and provide a backstory to tell how she met the paladin. The alternative would be to have her meet and join the party here in town. I'll give some thought to whether I could start the first post without knowing for sure what she'll do, or wait to find out.

So how would they view a healer who had the power to resurrect the dead, perhaps only the recently deceased, but nonetheless.....

When I played Annisthryienne and she gained that power, I always treated it as her contacting their spirits and guiding/persuading them to come back to the living, but it would be their choice, and sometimes they might not come back.

No problem, the dead usually have a choice, they can come back if someone is willing to make the effort.
It's when people force the dead to rise, or undead beast who prey on the living.

Then they take issue, they will restore life if they are able and it's proper.

Usually Wee Jass guides them.

That sounds like a good way to see things. I'm not familiar with the DnD gods and goddesses, but this sounds like a good idea for an unusual character. I don't necessarily see why the DMs would be hesitant. It's only natural that there would be clerics of all kinds of gods or goddesses.

Annisthyrienne was a healer, but she was also the Chosen high priestess of the goddess of fertility, so I guess that is as close to being a cleric as anyone would come in Arcanum. They do have an actual Priest profession though.

Do you folks think we should establish an order for posting, or leave it open to interpretation based on the story events?

Just wanted to say this sounds awesome and that I'll be one of the ones eagerly reading along when this gets going...if my schedule was a little more ordered and so on, I might even have tried to join you on this adventure but am not a gamer in the slightest and probably would have been more of a hindrance than anything else!

I don't agree, Sister. I've had a taste of your wonderful imagination, and gamer or not, I think you would be a fine participant. The reason we wanted gamers was primarily to try to ensure the continuation of the story, even past the first adventure. I'm a little paranoid about how group threads seem to die off too suddenly, even before they have a chance to get going. I'm sort of hedging my bets based on gamers eagerness to keep playing characters they love over a long span of time.

That and its a common thing for gamers to bring together a somewhat unlikely group of characters and work together towards a goal. Too often on other group threads, each person wants to go their separate way, hence: no group.

I know what you mean only too well, my own attempt at an adventure-slash-quest thread a few years ago went no where fast! Here's hoping this one fares better!!
And you flatter me, Lovely :rose:

I worked up a beginning post over the weekend. I'd still like to hear from cmky before posting, but we could begin and meet up with her character along the way. I've contacted her by PM about this option. :)

I haven't heard anything yet, but I think I will start the thread tomorrow evening. Hopefully I'll hear from cmky by then. If not, then the group can meet her character in town. I feel like waiting too long will dampen the interest that people have shown. It's time to move forward.

agreed. Though fore-warning, I have a slightly busy work week this.... week (?!). Just getting home 3 hours later then I normally would.

No worries. I just want to give people the sense that we're actually doing this and not just talking about it forever. My work has taken a turn for the busy as of yesterday too.

The first post leaves an opening for someone in the group, but I haven't specified who. I'll let you all work it out. In addition, it establishes that we've all met up, and know each other from prior experiences together, including an adventure we all just finished. As a direct result of that adventure, we're staying at a decent inn in town, being hailed as heroes and enjoying a few days of R&R.

To get this next adventure underway, I need to discuss a couple things with people through PMs, which I will be doing in the next couple evenings.
