My laptop is 13 months old. 1 month over warranty. And the hard drive died. I have lost everything again (2nd time this year). They want $700 bucks to fix it, and are faxing me a quote. I had to pay $100 for them to find out what the problem was.

Well, they better hurry up and fax it, because I just found out that the hard drive has a 5 year warranty by searching the oz site for compaq. And I'm going to send the quote off to Fair Trading.

And then I'm going back to the shop I bought it from. It was thier technician who referred me to this rip-off crowd because he was too busy to fix it, and that is sounded like hard drive problems. Bloody leading oz retailer my ass. Wait till I find the manager. They are going to fix it [their tech support told me it sounded like hard drive problems] and give me a credit note for $100, and kick their employees butt for referring business elsewhere.

Hard drive failure doesn't absolutely mean that will loose all of your data. Do yourself a real favor and invest in a USB memory stick. They even come in colors, so you can assessorize. If you care and want your data you will back it up away from that machine. I have a couple laptops and the one I like most is an old DELL inspiron 7500. If it dies, it's dead.

Never buy a laptop unless you already have a real computer to back everything up on. Daily. Desktops might break and if they do are easy to fix yourself, or a friend. They also have room for 2 HDDs for backup if you don't want to burn discs all the time. Laptops will break, it's only a matter of when and they're not as easy to take apart and the components are much more expensive. They are a tool of convenience and are not intended to replace a desktop.

<comforts wishful>

A possible alternative to using a memory stick, external harddrive or second pc for backing up is getting a gmail account (or any other large online storage space) and mailing the important stuff to yourself. Not as conveniant as having them on a drive, but it's safe and cheap.
