My mum borrowed my laptop for a trip.. Unfortunately, when I got it back, it was not in it's lovely case, but in her suitcase! It didn't seem damaged at first, but when I turned it on half the screen was missing. Half is normal, but the other half is like a blank TV channel.

Anyone more versed in computers know what happened or how to fix it? I'm dying here without my poor laptop

your laptop monitor is toast. you're gonna need a monitor cable and another monitor to see if anything else is fucked up, in essence.

i don't know how old your laptop is, but replacing the LCD can be pricey. however, as she's the one who broke it, she can pay the replacement costs. and for the love of god, don't ever let her borrow your laptop again. :>

It's a hardware thing, probably expensive to repair, get an estimate first.

External monitor might still work.

does every thing show up on the monitor but its all to one side like it is only using part of the screen, is so then its a monitor setting, if not then yes the lcd sounds like its history.

On most laptop computers it will cost to much to replace the lcd screen, unless it is a fairly new one of course that cost $2k or more.

Good luck

First and most important question:

Is your laptop still under the manufacturer's warranty or an extended warranty program?

If so, call whomever is responsible for the warranty and let them handle it. That's one of the things you paid for when you bought your laptop.

And, even if it's not still under warranty, you still need to contact the manufacturer to insure you'll get the monitor replaced properly. Laptops are not as "generic" as desktop computers so not just any local geek can always repair them. In the long run, even if it costs a bit more, the manufacturer will most likely get it done right the first time and will stand behind their work.
