Gas Running Out!

For the long-distance transportation of goods, yes, I feel your pain. Personal transport and filling up your car, I have no sympathy at all.

The Earl

It's too bad that you can't feel the pain of the "working man", the people that cut lawns and do the jobs that we don't want to do that are Americans who work hard and pay their taxes.

I hope to God that nothing ever happens to you in England.

Maybe you'll understand ...

$ 3.09 a gallon.... on the Ohio River at small town Portsmouth...

and not 24 miles away is Ashland Marathon Refiners Plant.... that is shut down

as we post...

we are a nation infected by a disease called greed... and profits.

Couture, don't be a wanker. I'm simply pointing out that, while you guys are moaning about $3 a gallon, we've had to deal with at least £0.80 a litre for several years now.

Count yourselves lucky. It's not a case of you getting unfairly screwed over; you've been luckier than most people for a long time.

The Earl

It doesn't matter that you've been 'suffering' for having had to deal with the price of gas that you've had to. A mature human being would think about the working class, that that as I've said before perform the jobs that we don't want to, who have to feed their children and live their lives while having to contend with the higher gas prices.

We also don't have the luxury of having London, Paris and the beautiful sights of Europe at our disposal, so maybe you should count yourself lucky.

Gas in Jackson MS is mostly from 2.75 to 2.90, but there is no gas to be found anywhere. Ambulance crews and Entergy trucks are having trouble getting gas as well. The hospital where I work has asked all nonessential people to take a personal day tomorrow to help save gas. Lots of people have started carpooling, and I've seen several electric golf carts on the roads in some places. Add to this the fact that at least half the city still has no power and it's pushing 100 degrees...

I'll be happy to trade places with some of you! My heart goes out to the people south of me.

There are ten large tankers full of petrol (gas in the US) on the way from Europe to the US - now.

European refineries are going to be working flat out to try to compensate for the temporary loss of refining capacity in the US. European governments are releasing petrol (gas) from their emergency stores so that US demands can be partially met.

We in the UK have been there. We were there in the Suez crisis in the 1950s, in the 3-day week of the 1970s, in the late 1970s and in the 1990s. The first two had and nearly had rationing of fuel with petrol vouchers only available for essential workers. We have seen queues at filling stations that had no fuel, only a rumour that they might get a delivery.

Petrol (gas) prices will rise all over Europe because the US oil markets are paying more for refined products delivered to the US and that means higher prices for us. If the rate of today's price rise locally continues for a week we will be paying the equivalent of ten dollars for a US gallon.

2.99. But...when I went into Walmart about an hour and a half ago, their price was 2.74. When I left Walmart, it was 2.99. So it went up 25 cents in half an hour.

Bush II just used the P-word.

Which immediately made me think of Dana Carvey’s imitations of Bush I.

Canadian buses are quite similar to American buses, except sometimes Canadian bus stops are colder. :(

Velvet: What about the English working man? Shouldn't we worry about him?

I don't get your point. I'm very sorry that the price of petrol is going up in the USA and I understand it's traumatic. But try imagining that your petrol cost $10 per gallon.

Then how would your working man fare?

The Earl

PS: I don't have the beautiful sights of New York, Washington, LA, etc at my disposal. I know of people who have never left their small town cause they can't afford to. I don't get what the sights of the cities have to do with anything.

I live in the Daytona Beach area and some gas stations are running out of gas.

Other stations that have gas are running the price of a gallon anywhere from $2.86 to $2.99.

How's the price of gas where you are and please name the city so we all know.

Thanks!
Velvet

4 litres to a gallon? We are paying $1.27 per litre today. Last year driving to NYC? It was $3.46 ... so, you are doing good.

Am I naive or misunderstood? I thought we had oil in Alaska? Anyone remember the infamous Pipeline??? or the wild life preserve they were going to drill into? Can someone explain this to me?
What about the oil in S. America and the MidEast?

Or Alberta ;) This is a corporate move, not a necessity to have prices go up from .79 cents a litre in June to incrementally ... before Katerina ... to .99 cents, and then suddenly an almost 30 cent increase because of what? What a crock of BS.

This is simply another natural calamity.

It was not until after Hurricane Katrina had passed, and the levee's broke, that the gas already in the distributors reservoirs spontaneously erupted into inflation.

LOL - so how do you propose we deflate "Veruca Salt"? :D

$2.99 in southern KY. I am required to drive in my work, sometimes 1000 miles per week. The reimbursement is not that great.

My uncle in Atlanta said they are running out of gas there. Lines as long as an hour just to try to buy some. Unsure of the price however. He has had to cancel his trip to visit my granny in Florida this weekend because he is afraid he won't be able to find fuel for the return trip.

Thanks KT. I may have to drive to jackson to get my folks if they don't get power soon. Glad to know there isn't any gas. :rose:

The Alaskan Pipeline is working and has been for years. The president has opened ANWR, thats not the problem. The Problem is that the oil reserves in Alaska are estimated at 16 billion gallons ( I believe) and the US alone uses up mor ethan that in a given 6 month period of time. We will have the oil tapped out and then where will we be?

Abut one quarter of our crude comes fromt he gulf/ At least ten major refineries are located on the Miss/La gulf coast. Itisn't neccessarily even the slowing of raw crude, it's the loss of refining capacity and the destruction of the colonial pipeline which carries refined product from the coast up to the major distribution points in the north east.

look and see where this is going.... North to Alaska...

they will not stop until they finish destroying the Arctic...

rather than allow progression of engines to the next level.

destroy the Arctic... and wreak havoc to the whole planet as a result.

and now the time is right to push this on to bear fruit for the Powers that rule us.

3.09 today.... 3.59 tomorrow.... and 4.09 by Tuesday...

Going back to Abs' post ... LOL ... I can see the headline, " N'Awlins flooded: World oil shut down!"

Perhaps, we can be reasonable about underlying US interests in Iraq, now?

There is no magic in the price of gasoline jumping from 2.00 to 3.50 a gallon. We just lost alot of supply due to hurricane Katrina. This was due to refineries shutting down and disruptions in the pipeline.

Law of supply and demand. Sure, Exxon who had record profits already this year, will not reap a huge windfall. However, if they didn't raise prices, then we would be in a situation of lines at the gas pumps and stations sold out of gasoline.

By increasing the price, they encourage conservation. How many people do you think bought at SUV this week? How many people decided NOT to take that long ride in the country this Sunday? How many drove at 55 instead of 75 mph?

Instead of giving tax breaks for Hummers and pie in the sky hydrogen fuel, we need policies and regulations that prepare us to deal with a world where they are not pumping gasoline any faster.

£1 a litre.

Have some perspective people!

That's $7.06 a gallon US. Atlanta's prices are climbing to that point with prices breaching the six dollar mark. And this is without taxes boosting up the prices.

$1.149 a litre CAN here or £0.52 a litre or $3.65 a barrel US.
