God damn computer unit.
the rattling piece of junk is going to be the death of me yet.! here's what was going on.
it was slow so i ran a scandisk and defrag. it had not been restarted in several days so i deceided to do a restart.
Windows started, but froze up in the middle of putting icons in the start tray {loading programs and starting them automatically}. the only thing i could do was to turn the system off with the on/off button. every time i tried it same thing.
i called gateway tech support. they had me put in the start up floppy and rum through it until i found the message {ms dos partition missing}. they had me look at a few things and said that i would have to WIPE MY HARD DRIVE CLEAN and reinstall windows.!!!!! after my eyesight returned and i was able to breath again i asked him about all the infromation and programs. was their some way to save them.?? he came back on the phone after about a three minute hold and said maybe but i had to call the fee help line at $1.95 a minute to see if there was a way to use my cdrw drive to do that at this point.
I informed my wife about what was said regarding windows.
she took it well i thought. face buired in her hands mumbling oh my god not again. then she looked up and said what i had been thinking " all them sob's know is reload windows.!! There has to be another way."
We were rescued by service tech at office depot. she has a part time job there. i still have my list of what to do.
He said to do it again every so often because system resourses under to much load causes about 90 percent of error messages and erratic behavior and freeze ups because of to many programs trying to run in the back ground. i had a total of thirty seven. i only saw eight icons. i down load a lot of programs and we load a lot of programs from cd's....so next time some tech support say's you have to reload windows to correct a problem, get a second or even a third opinion. i will.
