Gen X. The generation that became adults at seven, armed with latchkeys and rebellious attitudes.
We played in the streets, rode bikes without helmets, didn't wear seat belts, and somehow survived riding in the backs of pickup trucks all the way to town.
We drank water from garden hoses, sugar water flavored with Kool-Aid, and eventually graduated to Mad Dog 20/20.
We survived scorching metal slides in the summer and flying down the steepest hill in town on round sleds with no brakes in the winter.
We lived through heartbreak and hair bands. Bad perms and the best music ever. Field parties, bonfires, and enough questionable decisions to last a lifetime.
We watched the Challenger explode and the Berlin Wall fall, survived Y2K, and celebrated the glorious death of disco. And when Prince told us to party like it was 1999, who were we to argue?
Somehow, we went from threatening our siblings not to tell Mom what we'd done to threatening our friends not to tell our children what we did.
Now we've become the generation taking care of the people who once took care of us.
We grew up too damn fast, learned responsibility too damn young, and somehow became the most sarcastic, hardworking, fiercely independent bunch of overgrown kids the world has ever seen.
So come on, Gen X! Let's remember who we were, rediscover who we still are, share a few stories, laugh at our questionable decisions, and be ridiculously happy that the internet hadn't been invented yet!
