Katherine (kate) Johnson
20 years old
Blonde hair just past her shoulders
Icy blue eyes
5’5, 115 lbs, 34 b
For as long as she could remember, Kate’s family consisted just of her mother and herself. Her dad had left just a few months after she was born, leaving her mother to work two full time jobs for most of her life. Kate was alone most nights and went out with older kids from her neighborhood, and started drinking and smoking early, before getting involved in harder things, as well as slowly developing an eating disorder, forcing herself to purge, and not eat, to prove to herself she still had control over herself.
She found someone through a friend who could supply her with high quality goods, whenever she needed them. Unfortunately for Kate, she didn’t know he’d gotten into trouble with the law, and was promised no jail time if he helped the cops, and turned in his customers. Her dealer turned narc had been reporting to the police what she’d been getting from him for a month, before she was finally busted buying a big stash for her and a friend. Her sentence, because she was so young, was that she would be placed into a treatment facility to help her beat her addictions, and eating disorder, which meant no specific time was placed on her release.
Kate looked out the window as the court appointed guardian pulled under the awning of the rehab clinic. She got out of the car, and took her bas from the back seat of the car before walking through the doors. Her eyes focused on the linoleum floor of the entry way as her appointed guardian registered her at the desk.
She looked up as she felt an orderly tugging at the bags she held in her hand, and she looked at the woman standing in front of herself and the guardian. “We need to search through your belongings to make sure you aren’t bringing anything illegal into the facility” She explained as they took her bags away. “They’ll be returned to your room shortly” the woman assured. The court appointed guardian, assured she was fully registered, said goodbye to Kate, and left as Kate was ushered down the hallway. She pulled her sweater around her more as she heard the cries of patients in some rooms.
The woman showed Kate her new room, the cold grey color of the walls, the bed against the wall. She looked around the room, the barred window and the dresser against the opposite wall. She closed her eyes for a minute, feeling her last hit of cocaine and her last joint starting to slowly wear off. She’d done them right before her ride arrived, knowing that it would be the last time for a long time she’d have a hit of anything. The woman spoke to Kate, pulling her back to the present as she introduced herself as Linda, and then told Kate that it was almost time for her first group session.
“I, I don’t think I’m ready for that yet” Kate said, walking to the window and looking out at the grey November sky. Fitting, she thought for where she was, and how she knew she’d feel soon.
“Don’t worry” Linda told her “You don’t have to say anything at your meeting today, it’s just for observing what happens. You’ll go to the group meeting, and then have a one on one with your counselor who will work with you through your addictions, as well as a meeting with your eating disorder counselor and nutritionist this evening.” For what her job was, Linda was far too happy of a woman, smiling as she spoke about the gruesome schedule of Kate’s day.
She walked with Linda to the group meeting, and sat down at the end of a beaten up looking couch. “The rest of the group will arrive in a moment or two, try to relax a little bit, get comfortable” she suggested as she turned to leave.
Kate sat with her head against the back of the couch, closing her eyes dreading what her life would be like today, and for the length of her stay here.
